Interesting Craigslist finds

^

You can pick those up for under $3k + freight on Alibaba.....probably $4-4.5k total after shipping and import fees.

I've seen some of the import saw mill people also starting to sell them.

I question the capacity listed though. The biggest one from the china vendor I'm looking at is only about 1,200lbs. Even if his does 1.5 tons, that's not a very big log.

Exactly. Knowing what the options are and how much they cost is 99% of not getting swindled.

Knuckle booms are cool and all and it's nice to see them making their way down to small sizes but for a given capacity a crane will always be smaller, lighter and cheaper.

Any idea what freight costs? That seems handy as fu%k for around the yard or local trips to pick up heavy stuff.

I'd guess somewhere in the $4-800 range. Really not clue how prices have changed in the last few months.

I currently have two large band saw mills getting loaded in China. The freight was about $1400 for the pair....I believe that's a total of 4 crates - one for each mill and one for each trailer. I'm still not entirely sure what kind of duties and tariffs I'm going to have to pay, but I budgeted about $1k. I think it'll come in quite a but under that. This was my first order to get a feel for how it all works.

I'd say plan on about $1k total and you're probably in the ballpark.

Keep me updated or maybe start a thread detailing your experience. Im sure im not the only one wondering about importing cheap chineese equipment.

I think it's a generally saturated market, but you still might be able to find a niche here or there. But chances are if there's a buck to be made, someone else is already importing things.

There is some cool weird mini equipment you can get. I've talked to manufacturers on alibaba about all kinds of min excavators, loaders and other weird equipment. Some of the pricing makes it tempting, but then you start thinking about (lack of) warranty and getting spare parts.

FWIW, it took about 45 days from when I ordered the saws to when they told me they were crated and ready to ship. I lost probably a good two weeks because I was extremely busy and took a couple extra days to make the final payment and then another week and a half to sign the papers for the importer (I had some concerns about the process and company and had to do a little research on it so it took a while). I just get all the paperwork signed a few days ago and I'm waiting to hear when it'll actually be loaded on the boat and then no clue how long it'll take to actually get here and clear customs. I'm guessing at least 3-4 weeks.

If someone could get that to the UP for relatively cheap I would gladly get it

i know on tractorbynet.com there was a guy that had a thread about importing a mini ex thru alababi. he went thru the whole process.

Im curious what you think "relatively" means? It looks well over 8ft. Cheapest option is a stepdeck. You're looking at roughly 900mi. So somewhere in the neighborhood of $4500-5000. Going into the UP means there's not much option except to DH out and I don't know the open deck freight market in Mi real well.

I was thinking around 1k. Load it on a goose neck and head north.

I didn't think of the width

That was a good thread, he had a lot of good points in there of the ins and outs of things you might not realize the first time through.

Tracks on those are relatively easy to take off. Pull those and the blade and I'd bet it's a legal load.

So then you just have to find somebody with a gooseneck long enough to put it on the front (assuming that the seller has a way to pick it up and set it on there) then set the tracks and the blade on the deck behind it and pick them off when it gets where it's going.

Drive/push it on, then jack up and remove the tracks.

If it will run in its current state, spend half a day getting it going and use it's own power to set the blade on a trailer before unpinning it. Or just sacrifice the blade if you're not bringing it to snow country.

Edit: Didn't even look at the location. If I hadn't just started a new job and had more time to fuck around I'd be on my way.

Hey crispins - I need to store something in your yard for a couple months. :flipoff2:

and the quality can be suspect. did this with sickle mowers ~5 years ago. Those things were junk.

I saw that listing locally last week or so.

I know you are joking but I do still have a house over by where it is located with a few acres of land so I could store it for a while if someone needed.

I'd still charge $3000 to haul it to the UP as a legal load AFTER someone else took it apart and loaded it on the trailer. Fuel cost alone on that haul would be $1000.

those tracks come right off, roll them up and strap to rear, not a wide load any more.

It doesn't really work like that. Lets say it takes 3hrs to pull the tracks. Thats fine, but Im not offering 3hrs of labor for free. I don't even tarp for free.

Why would I haul that piece of equipment for less $ and more labor than just booking and hauling a similar load for the same or more $?

Do you buy chance have a way to get it there in it's current state if it is a short drive? I want it but can't do anything with it for a year or two.

Because you would help start a cool build thread here. :flipoff2:

At this very moment I don't. I am possibly going to lease on to a new company in a couple weeks and start pulling a stepdeck. I might also stay with the current carrier and if I do, I'll be switching to a flatbed or stepdeck.

I am hoping someone local could store it for a year and then I could come get it with a goose and pull the tracks and blade. That thing would be fun as hell during the UP winters. Or if someone could get it and drop it on crispins land if he was good with that.

Price dropped to 1100. Still looking for someone who can store that thing locally for a year.
