I had a great time, hung out with Clb the whole week. I'll be making some notes here for future runs.
Sunday 8/18
We met up in Lodi and headed south.
Fueled up in Madera and topped off in Shaver Lake there is an impressive climb that will take a quarter tanks to get up.
Got to Courtright Reservoir and the trailhead.
Checked out some campgrounds on Courtright and climbed Chicken rock.
Met
Jes from the board and his friends camped along the trail, shot the shit for a while.
Neither of us felt like attempting Thompson hill in the dark so we found a likely site to set up about 9.5 miles in. No Water and no restroom but it was a good flat site.
Monday 8/19
broke down camp and on the trail by 7:30 or so.
put in my first 2 gallons of spare fuel
We rolled right into Thompson hill, Clb made it look easy in his Toyota I got hung up once and took a small tug from a strap.
All in all, neither of us had any real problems on thompson, just a long, steady, steep climb through sometimes loose boulders.
We cruised right past thompson lake hearing that there were no fish to be had there.
We also passed by Summit Lake, rumors are that there are fish but it is a ways off the trail and there were no great camp spots.
Arrived at East Lake approximately 15 miles into the trail and decided to camp there, good sites and restrooms. East lake is about a five minute walk from camp, we took our poles down and went all the way around the shallow lake but had no luck and could see no evidence of fish.
Tuesday 8/20
Slightly later start, on the trial by 8:00 or 8:30
I siphoned in my final 3 gallons of spare fuel which had me around 3/4 tank.
We set a steady pace and wheeled about 5 miles, lots of rocks, plenty of dirt road sections, not technical but plenty of fun to be had.
Clb and I arrived at Ershim Lake about 20.5 miles into the trail sometime after noon to find
Pyleit and his crew packing up and with a lot of impressive trail scars on their larger rigs.
Ershim Lake was about the nicest camp spot Clb and I had seen and fish were jumping like crazy on the lake, we even watched Pyleit wade out and catch a few so we decided we would stay and spend a day on the lake while the rest of the crew moved forward.
Wednesday 8/21
After Coffee and breakfast Clb and I waded out into the lake in the morning and caught several beautiful fish. Ershim Lake is very shallow around the edges, about waist deep 20-30 yards from the bank, the fish like to hang out in the deeper water past that point.
After warming up in the sun we hiked all the way around Ershim Lake finding every rock and log that would let us cast from the shore pulling in several more fish. I pulled in 8 fish for the day.
Jes and crew caught up to us as I was getting out of the lake for a second time and they were headed for Mallard Lake.
Thursday 8/22
We left Ershim camp with the intention to check out Mallard Lake and Lakecamp Lake another 4-5 miles down the trail.
Mallard Lake had a good campground and restrooms with the lake about a 5 minute hike, we also saw fish jumping. We decided to go on down to Lakecamp because it looked closer to the trail.
The short section between these lakes is a rough downhill and I was followed by several cows who were fans of rock crawling apparently. Lakecamp Lake was a disappointment, the edges are swampy and the water is reedy, no great camp to be had either, though we did see some ok areas.
We kept pressing on in the hope that we would find a decent campsite, Nice rock gardens and steep descents, but before we knew it we were done with the trail.
We decided to check out Deer Lake trail which is an offshoot before you hit the blacktop, this was a dirt road and ended with bout a five minute hike to Deer Lake.
Deer lake did not have any Deer or fish that we could see, it did have a fuck ton of tiny frogs though. Deer lake was too exposed to the wind to camp and I was starting to develop a squeal and tick at my drivers rear wheel so we needed to find a flat spot to camp and do a little repair.
We aired up and headed down the mountain on the blacktop, I found a great spot out of the wind with a little creek and a flat DG road to work on the Jeep. Turns out I had lost one of the pins that holds my parking brake shoe in place, it was making a racket so I stripped out all of the parking brake stuff and we set up camp.
Friday 8/23
We hit the road early and fueled up in Shaver Lake. Jammed back through Madera and hit 99 north and Clb and I parted ways in Lodi. Got home and showered twice
Pics to follow.
