I’ve made the mistake of shopping for new bibs and jacket . I wore the same coveralls from Walmart for well over 10 years they were junk and I had to layer like crazy to stay miserable . Looking at doing some Out of state hunts coming up and a lot more hunting in general . Prices of quality stuff is crazy . Have looked at Sitka, Kuiu, first lite , and now most interestingly SKRE. What are you guys using for cold weather sits ?

Bibs are my biggest hang up . I would like something really warm but not too bulky and don’t want to not be able to walk without burning up .

Have cabela’s brand stuff from 2018 that’s pretty nice. I’ve never seen the reason to spend $500+/piece like Sitka, Kuiu, etc. cost. I think bids, inner hoodie, and outer coat cost around $300-400 when I bought it. IMO it is still worth layering properly even with with my setup.

I bought into some of the sitka stuff a few years ago. Coming from carrharts and a hoody, It was pretty eye opening on how well that style of clothing worked to keep a guy warm even when he was wet.

I wouldnt buy it again though. Not at full price anyways. I would be looking more towards the hiking/ outdoor clothing that isnt marketed towards hunters.

https://www.camofire.com/ also has some pretty decent deals every once in a while too

Problem with Hiking or General outdoor stuff is that it's not quite a durable as they would like you to think or very quiet. I turn to alot of military suppliers but yes good gear is spendy but being warm to me is worth it. I actually have an problem overspending now as I suffered with cold and wet gear for a long time growing up. No fault to anyone just they didn't have what they do now and in the right sizes.

and it also depends on the style and where it is made. I will overpay for stuff made here or in Canada. But I won't pay the same for equivalent gear made in PRC, Vietnam, Bangladesh, etc.

Hill People Gear, First Spear, Beyond Clothing, XGO, Mantis, Fox River, Arcteryx (haven't shopped here in a bit as they push an Agenda to much for me but everything has been good).

Eurooptic frequently has Sitka on clearance. At those prices its about the same as decent outdoor brand. I've been looking for some decent early season pants. You don't need a bib here till late decemeber.

You can get by with the cheap stuff, but the good stuff is really nice when the weather turns ugly and weighs less for the features and durability.

There is absolutely nothing that you’re going to be able to hike in wearing and not overheat that will keep you warm sitting still for 3 hours in temps below freezing. I haven’t pulled the trigger on it yet, but that’s the allure of the 12v heated vests and jackets to me.

The best stuff I’ve found for still hunting (slipping through the woods slowly, moving some but not fast), is KUIU’s Kenai Jacket. It is designed to breathe and is warm but doesn’t cut the wind well without a shell over it. They just came out with some bibs but I don’t know that many people have used them yet.

I’ve bought the vast majority of their stuff on sale, it’s expensive but so are out of state tags. On a mule deer hunt this year the last three days were ~ 36 degrees, drizzling, with 15-25 mph winds. One night was well below freezing, one night it poured and got pretty damn windy. I was perfectly comfortable in my gear, we finally packed out because we couldn’t see anything with the fog.

My cousins that hunt swear by a small brand called Shiver Shield. I looked into it but where I live it doesn't get cold enough to need it.

No idea what a "OOS" is, but regardless if you round up stuff you have or look like you crashed through a cabalas...layers.

I go through much of winter with a T shit, long sleeve shirt and hoodie. Another hoodie if it's coldish and a jacket when it's really cold.

Long john and pants for the bottom, snow pants or bib pants when it's cold.

Baffin steel toe boots and heated socks. I almost lost parts of my feet years ago from frostbite, so they get cold easy. Can't even sleep without socks on.

The company is in Idaho but doesn't state where their gear is produced?

Their line is pretty limited right now but have been watching them as well. Got a couple of their boots for casual formal wear.
I stand corrected! Vietnam or China. Dang it. Sorry y’all.

Thats pretty much what I was doing before. What amazed me was that its possible to stay warm, even though you are wet. And clothes will actually dry out in a short amount of time. Also layers dont have to be bulky. It was pretty eye opening to me. Wish it wasnt all camo stuff though

I only bought into the sitka stuff to start, as there are 3 bars in the same parking lot as a sportsmans warehouse. So sometimes you spend some time in there sobering up before the drive home. Sometimes you buy some random shit.

Hoodie ain't gonna cut it if it's cold. I know your in AK but that's not Nome.

What's wrong with wool? I hunt in some pretty cold weather wearing pretty much all wool. Never had any scent problems and you can find it made in the USA.

Nothing and I have a crap load of it. Lots and lots of the Merino Wool, I have some old plain wool and it's a bit itchy.

Nothing cotton will do that, you didn't specify the material though.

It gets pretty cold here. It's 25* today and snowy if that gives you an idea. Saw -40* several times last year. That alone isn't horrible, but add the wind and it downright sucks. Granted I'm working a mix of indoors, in a truck and outside, so not like I'm outside all day.

There's maybe better things to use, but I can buy a dozen hoodies for $200, where that's what, 1 hunting shirt?

What's cold?

I'm good in a tshirt, jeans, and academy brand coveralls down to the single digits. I hate the cold.

okay that is on the cooler side. :homer: Regardless if it's 25 I'll be rocking 4-5 layers if sitting outside. Hoody isn't gonna cut it.

I could see bundling up heavy if a guy were sitting in a treestand or something.

But you start climbing the hills and layers are where its at

Same here Weasel that’s why I finally spent some money . Being layered up til you can’t move and look like marshmallow sucks . I’ll see if it’s all it’s cracked up to be soon.

Didn’t read all the reply’s but Sitka. 100% worth the money. Once you try it you won’t ever use anything else. My brother runs badlands and it seems nice as well. Keep your eyes open for sales both Sitka and badlands go on sale a couple times a year for 20%-50% off.

mil surplus if you're ballin' on a budget. I bought one of the goretex shells and its basically the same as my high dollar snowboard jacket.

Badlands is cheap shit I shredded in a couple seasons.
First lite hoodies and pants have lasted well, and I'm trying their SEAK jacket the last 2 seasons. So far so good. Also got a pair of Sitka pants...not the downpour, but the brushed face goretex ones. I forget what the model is. Also so far so good.

Is any of the stuff mentioned above actually quiet? I've got some oddball brand camo outer shell stuff that was marketed for turkey hunting. The outside is similar to brushed fleece, with a mesh inner backing. It's pretty quiet, and as raingear and cutting the wind it works well. On a windless quiet morning, hanging from a tree in a saddle with my bow, I've got to be really careful of how I move because it does make some noise. The Sitka and Kuiu stuff I've handled didn't seem much different. Wool, I'd rather not feel like a warm drowned rat.

I've sat on stands off season and played around with what I can get away with regarding movement and noise, not much.
