What's new

How terrible of an idea is this?

Yamaha TW200

There's something about that I really like. I bet it would make a good "first bike", and even brand new, it's not all that much $. And would probably still be fun after you get the hang of it.

I'm trying to talk myself out of it :lmao:

They definitely have something that makes them appealing. I've wanted one of those for a while, only thing keeping me away is I want a cage around me on these roads. And I suppose, I also want one of these becuase I know with my penchant for speed, I'll have a valid liscense for a lot longer with a TW. =-)

My first fully functional bike is the Drz400 I bought last year. It's sweet! I've enjoyed it enough that we decided my wife needed a bike, so we got her a Yamaha Xt250. It's even easier to ride than my Suzuki, is fuel injected, great center of gravity, and insanely low seat height. Handles very well, especially at low speeds. The fueling is perfect. Gutless, perfectly predictable, an absolute joy to ride. I've had it to an indicated 60mph. I'm a 250lb fatty, so I'm way more than the suspension can handle.

Even between the mighty 400cc and a 250cc, smaller and lighter is more fun. Beginner or not, but definitely for a beginner. You wouldn't ever see me on that Mean Streak. If I wanted a heavy bike, I'd get that new Tenere 700. If I decided I wanted more excitement than what I have, maybe a Husky FE350.

02 mean streak was my first bike. I took my riding test on it and aced it. The guy giving the test was baffled yet couldn't stop laughing.

Dual disk brakes work badass, the bike has good v-twin power that is very manageable. It handles well for a heavy bike. I took mine to Sturgis and had a blast, only got ridiculed 2 times. It will get you in trouble if you look for it, but if you are posting here, you are probably not that big of a dumbass. Hopefully. :flipoff2:

I think it's an excellent first bike for an adult. When I had it, I could smoke my buddy on his brand new fatboy and that really pissed him off, especially considering my fat ass ex wife was on the back. :lmao:

that's part of the reason I love driving my Willys around, try as I might, I can't really break many speed laws :lmao: But it's still fun to drive

I took my test on my old wxc 360 husky. Added headlight, tail and brake lights, horn and mirror.

Didn't even bother with DOT tires, and made the test look silly. The instructor didn't appreciate the 2t motocrosser but it has a plate so she couldn't turn me away. :flipoff2:

Still a blast to screw around with on the street.

I rode 1 harley, 1 buell, and 1 cbr600f4i. I would be dead on a street bike. I have zero off switch for speed once I stand on a bike. Dirt single track keeps me slowed down enough to live.

Buy whatever you like, replicate the test in a parking lot with cones, and practice.
Then put your head on a swivel because people suck.

It's certainly not an ideal first bike, but can be made to work.

If the price is right and you don't mind sticking to pavement they are a good cruiser, my brother had one. There are certainly better bikes for beginners, enduro bikes as has been suggested, but they do eat tires a lot faster than a cruiser.

The big thing to consider is how well the voice in the back of your head that says don't do dumb shit works.
If you are nice and smooth in your inputs and watchful for road hazards you will do fine.
If you drink a six pack and try to grip it and rip it to impress the other idiots at the bar, It will put you in the ER.

The lightweight ADV bikes are where it's at these days, but prices reflect that.

Check out my KX 500, great bike for first time riders:
