Hot tub pump leaking - rebuildable?

I have never had any success replacing seals in pumps

Never .

Every single one I’ve attempted has taken all day to fix and still leaks .

I haven’t had any issues with the pump in my hot tub ,but I deal with a lot of similar size transfer pumps at work and if one starts leaking I just buy another and toss the leaker in the scrap pile .
Usually salvage the motor since it’s a three phase , but never have any issues with the motor , always the pump head , which in most designs can’t be swapped without dis assembling the pump head and ruining the shaft seals .

don’t want the downtime of repairing it and it still leaking .

Nasty hot tubs are all over CL and FBMP for pretty cheap...

Sorry for your bad luck, or more than likely your lack of proper instruction on the procedure.

I've rebuilt 100s of centrifugal and jet pumps with a couple of pool pumps and never had a seal leak. My dad taught me how to do it though.

Minus your dad teaching me....I've had the same results

For the exact reason the op posted this thread
My impression was that a lot of people buy houses with them and never use them and sell them for cheap in working condition when they decide they want the patio/porch/deck space for something else. I bet he can find one like that.

Not worth having to haul off and dispose of a 400lb tub to get a $400 pump that's likely fucked up too. :shaking:

Maybe, but 99% "just have s slight leak. Works great"

Around here it seems like the surrounds rot away and they're "free".

I have two of these cove tubs that came with the property - one at the main house and one at the guest house/rental. The rental one had never been used until I filled it last year when I listed it on ABB. The one at my house had been used by the PO for a couple years, I think. It worked fine for the last year or two, but this year I've had to replace the GFCI breaker, replace the heater and now the pump.

Looking at the impeller and seals on the pump, I suspect some of this is because it sat empty for the first year or so I was here and the seals dried out. The impeller shaft was pretty much bonded to the seal when I finally managed to rip it apart to remove it.

The most common cause of failure is improper water balance. Low ph, alkalinity, and calcium will eat a shaft seal like cancer

New wet end showed up today. Got it installed aaaaand.....

The fucking motor is toast.

It was struggling a little to start. I have it a little help and it did spin up several times and seemed ok, but the case was getting really hot and started to smell like burning. I thought the motor felt a little hot when I was testing it to figure out where the leak was, but I figured it was my imagination. Nope. FML.

Found that Vevor has an exact replacement so for $170, I'm gonna see how long it'll last.

Timely thread.

Buddy showed up today with a pump motor under his arm. Impeller ate a rope somehow and snapped off. All that was left on the shaft was a bit of plastic and the brass insert. He tried holding the shaft with pliers, but couldn't because that sealing surface plastic bit was there.

First tried knocking off the brass nut with a cold chisel. Wouldn't move.

My options were to see if I could change rotation on the motor and get the motor to unscrew itself  or pound a 12 point socket onto the brass nut and impact it off.

The impact took it off with no fight at all.
