What's new

Home defense shotguns, what kind of “extras” do you run if any?

I’m going to reach past the 870 and Saiga and grab the side by side. Maybe the 870 if it didn’t have a turkey barrel on it.

Short little coach gun is plenty for the house and my 1/4 acre suburban yard. Just have more time behind it than the other stuff. I’ve never felt under gunned checking a bump in the night with that thing in hand.

As far as extras bandolier looks like a good idea.

My current bed gun is a Keltec KS7. I'm running a RDS and a light on it.

I only shoot either reduced recoil loads or mini's. They run 2-300fps slower, but the recoil is night and day. I can crank it out as fast as I can pump and stay on target. Wife can shoot no prob. I have zero concerns at home defense ranges about lethality. I keep it stacked buck/slug. We live on the edge of town and I've had moose on the front porch. Hell I even had the neighbors steer in the front yard.

Get yourself a few boxes of reduced recoil or mini buck, pattern them, see if they run in your gun, etc. I've found pretty big differences in patterns, and huge differences in slug accuracy. Not all guns will run mini's. Think my little 18" KS7 holds like 14! You lose a few pellets per round, but double capacity. (FWIW I've found the Federal reduced recoil 00 buck to pattern well in my guns)

As far as the RDS sight, I freaking love it. I run a Sig Romeo 5 (3 of them, and counting). I've busted clays, and patterned some hot turkey loads out to 70yds. Love the RDS on a shotgun. Like a front bead in a HUD.

About $160 average.

This was my first time shooting a shotgun, about 15 years ago:

That was after about five or six rounds. Yes, I understand I wasn't doing it right at the time. But that's the bruising I can expect anywhere the rifle/shotgun is held on me. Hence, pistol grips.

I’m pretty sure the fun police have banned those from California

As soon as we get out of here, one of those will be on my Christmas list :smokin:

As long as the barrel is long enough (16" on a shot gun iirc) and it makes the over all length, it should be fine.

Anyone who's ever shot a shot gut without a full stock of some kind will know how dumb that really is though.

18" on a shotgun, 16" on a rifle

Light with a strobe, and pistol grips. No stock. 18.5"

Don't do this unless you are a hemopheliac who bruises at the drop of a hat. I can understand your use case, but for the rest of everyone just don't. Strobes are for raves, not firearms.

As for the AK shotguns, had a converted Saiga and converted several others for friends. 1 of 4 ran everything and needed no work, the other 3 were ammo finicky and wanted 1 1/8 oz loads to cycle. Sold it for a VEPR and it hasn't missed a beat. Russian mags are stupid expensive though.

Main home defense shotgun is a KSG with 15 rounds of low recoil 00 buck. Only thing on it is a light. May add a small red dot at some point.

Before that I used an old 870 wingmaster with a 20" BBL and 8rnd extended tube. It has since been returned to a 28" hunting - trap config.

To the OPs question you don't need tons of extra junk on your shotgun the 590 is a great platform. Definitely get a bayonet for it.
Add a light if you want, but it isn't necessary and not much else.

When I got the 500 w/pistol grip years ago, I got the Butler Creek sling to keep it with me & practiced using shotgun as a bat if necessary. I always left it loaded w/3 shells, never took out the plug for extra ammo.

Bayonet add on does sound good

I pick it up tomorrow :smokin:

I want to find a compact light, nothing stupid expensive. I have a spare shell holder that wraps around the stock, I may look at a side saddle later

I grabbed the first 590 I could get my hands on, the next one will have a bayonet lug :grinpimp:

I like a classic side by side hammer cock shotgun. extras would be buck shot strapped to the stock :)

It’s home :smokin:

Let the gadget shopping begin!!

I put a Mossberg 590 in jail this evening. 6+1, 18.5 bbl :smokin:
I had a Winchester 1200 a few years ago, and sold it because I was a dumbass :homer:

It has been a while since I had a “Home defense shotgun”. I was thinking about adding a sidesaddle, and maybe Magpul furniture eventually (to add a light?)

Also have a 590A1 that resides in the closet... plain jane, no frills with a shell pouch on the stock for the extra 5 rounds. Have had it since 1992??? I think. My best purchase for home defense to date.

I do also have an 18" Remington Police model on the wing master receiver. It's a toss up between the two models really. I prefer the safety on the mossberg, and I love the action on the remmy. Bunch of little things make it a pretty even deal all the way round.

I still have the stock sleeve shell holder from when I had my Winchester. I’m still going to look at lights. We’re out in the country on eleven acres, I’m more likely to encounter a four legged problem in our inner perimeter than a two legged one. I may keep a few game loads in it, and put some 00 buck in the spare holder

It’s been a while since I held a shotgun. I’m going to fondle this one a bit until I get that “muscle memory” thing I have with my other grab in the middle of the night guns

The 18.5" is a 7 shot if I recall? That extra 5 rounds is handy to have! I use this style pouch on the stock. https://lapolicegear.com/bushhltypshs.html

Time is a killer on those types that have the stretchy material. After a while they lose the ability to hold the shells. Just my .02

For a light~ eotech makes a pretty usable one for the 590. I just use a flashlight... I only have one pistol and AR with a light mounted on it.

The 590 is super easy and fun to shoot... I can't stress, at least for me, how much more I like the safety and other features on the mossberg. I also like the added mag capacity of the 590. It does rattle a wee bit more than some, but it's an easy enough thing to del with.

Now that's just classy in the trench gun sort of way.

Isn't it though.

I've been thinking about doing the trench gun conversion on my father's old model 97. It's about 800 to have it done, but much cheaper than an actual one, which are often fakes and probably too expensive to actually use hard at all.

But a classy looking 590a1 is just the right combination of military and walnut. Have yet to see one in person though. Will probably buy it if I do.

Something like that deserves an absurdly long WWI style bayonet. Might need to weld the back half of a cheap M16 bayonet to the blade of something else to make it happen though.

Being Canadian, mine is of course, for bear defense.

It's an 870 express that I've had for about 20 years, that is slicker than a new wingmaster, with an 18" barrel, and a 2 round extension. I've got a 5 round sleeve on the buttstock, and a hogue forend. I'd like to add a light, but I'm not a fan on the pressure switches I tried.
