What's new

Have you ever called it quits on a project? Given up? Dumped it?

Call Tyler at Toms 4x4 in Chattanooga and get on the schedule.
Absolutely top notch guy.
And I'm pretty sure I could deliver it for you.

I just bought a fun street car. Makes me want to just drive around, take road trips and enjoy the no project life. I'm still going to rebuild my buggy, probably not sell it because used buggy prices are stupid, but I'm very likely done with offroading for a good bit. It'll get driven once a year or so and collect dust the rest of the time.
I've sold plenty of vehicles that could have been a project and thank god I never committed to them.

Next up would be selling the street car in a year or so and try to get into a more dedicated sports car or luxury vehicle so I can cruise with buddies and go to good restaurants and enjoy a less stressful existence. Arriving home and the only thing you have to do is open and close the garage door sounds like an amazing proposition to me right now.

I have bought a house with a giant shop thinking I'd build a ton of shit there, and right now nothing would make me happier than it being completely clean, used for vehicular storage and that's it. Weird how things change.

you can't quit yet man! I still need to talk you into doing some wiring on my 72 ford truck with a explorer 302 swap!

Also, if Tyler doesn't have time I know another guy that does jeep stuff around here.

I have two that I gave up on and regret.
‘76 or ‘77 highboy Ford that I bought from a guy at work. I got it running but the body was rusting off the frame. It was in terrible shape. I scrapped it 20 years ago and wish I would have just scrapped the body and saved everything else.
I bought a ‘77 wagoneer from a local salvage yard that they picked up from a donation auction. This was also about 20 years ago. It was low miles and the body was in great shape but it was not running. I bought it for around $600. I stored it for 3 or 4 years and lost my storage spot. Brought it home and got it running. Didn’t have room for it at the house and got sick of moving it around. I sold it to a guy on the east coast for around $1200. This is the one I really regret. It would have been a great cruising rig.

I'm not putting that on the internet.

Haha, finding work isn't the problem, I have heaps of demand.
At some point in the years back, I needed some catalyst to focus on. To numb the shit that was going on and feel like I was a productive member of society and it did just that.

Now I'm in a much better place and I'm slowly realizing that I'm running on 4h of sleep per night, pure adrenaline and have not taken a vacation or truly relaxed in a few years. Part of this realization is that I just don't find that dealing with custom shit and the disruption that customers bring in my life worth it anymore. I now understand why "old timers" in the hot rod world have projects that take years to complete. I always thought they were lazy and just needed to "lock-in and get shit done", but the toll it takes on your life is pretty big.
I hear from friends and mentors that I need to raise my prices (I haven't changed anything since I started, pre-covid) but even tripling my rate wouldn't really help with what's holding me right now.

I might try a new business idea, as I miss the extra income, but the car I'm working on now will be the last one for a while. I've already turned down about 1 years worth of work already. You'd have to make me one of those "you won't be able to refuse" deals for me to consider it.

So much truth there.

In my life I work harder for everyone else than myself. Then there are more important things than the project that need to be done all the time.

Doesn't matter what I want, more about what needs to get done first.

Consider it all the time. I have entirely too much crap. The vinyl wrap is at the end of its life span and it blew a head gasket during the summer. Between the two I'm looking at 5-6k without addressing anything else I want to address. When I originally built this thing I didn't expect it to work well and always intended on moving the axles, tires, wheels, and whatever else works to a Jeep. 6 years later here we are. It ended up working well until recently. Now I have it and the Jeep that was to eventually get its stuff both in the driveway. I did flush the cooling system this morning and remove the thermostat in preparation for some blue devil to see if I can buy some time through the winter and deal with it next year.
