Thinking about getting a connex for storage.

I'm thinking it's too much weight for my truck.

2010 power wagon so 5.7 with bags
9k pound GN
9k pound container supposedly

I'm ok with 16k with my GN and 2 Jeeps. That has only been an hr and half one way trip tho.

This will be 6 hrs+ round trip and 5ft of over hang.

Is it too much?

How much would it cost to have it professionally Moved by someone with insurance and the right equipment?

I don't know how I would even get a bid for that, but might be worth knowing how much you're 'saving' by doing it yourself. Figure in your mileage for 6 hours of towing as part of the comparison too.

You didnt say how big or what type of container but the 9k is what ive heard about some.

Terrain matters too. With the wind of the flatish land of the midwest, id say no prob.

It's a 40ft, both ends have doors. I just googled a 40ftr for weight and got 9k.

Trip is from south of Joplin to KC so pretty flat. 3hrs drive in a regular vehicle so add some for a large load and the fact I wouldn't be doing over 65.

The ones we deal with are 8200lbs.

You'll need a permit for the overhang if you want to be legal. 4ft overhang is the max federally. Some states might be less even?

No idea where you are so that load could be anywhere from pigs not giving it a 2nd glance to getting a full body cavity search from the guy with kasbasa fangers.

No. You'll be fine. Not "I'm a massive idiot but my equipment is such overkill I'll still succeed despite my own best effort" type fine that many idiots seem to think is the only way to roll based on their own poor experiences with anything less, but still fine. Easily better than "RV salesman said I can tow this" type situations.

You don't need shit for rear overhang as long as you got lights on it.

Magnet lights are cheap and everyone should have a set for dumb shit like this. You can zip tie them onto the door bars or whatever.

I think the OP will be fine if it’s not windy. He said it’s not much for hills, so the brakes are not an issue if he takes it easy. But wind can be a problem.

As far as the overhang, I believe you only need the lights if your driving at night. A red rag will due in the day time.

Agreed. Most cops won't mess with the red flags. They want to bust people doing work commercially without a CDL. :homer:

Which this will completely look like.

It's basically rolling probable cause for the DOT with a GN and a shipping container on it hanging off 5ft on the back.

If you are in your state, It won't be an issue. Crossing State lines on interstates is where those boys sit. I think you will be fine.

As for OP's truck, Just leave it in OD off and set the cruise at 60-65. MOFO's towed way more than that with cattle trailers, 4 speeds, and gas 460 trucks.

I stopped in to the VA State office close to me and asked to talk to someone about the non-cdl busts they had been doing in our area. It was all based on 1 ton trucks hauling skid steers on goose-necks for commercial uses. No tickets where given to private guys.

I doubt you can get up to 65mph, much less over it.

Not only are you pushing 25k gross weight, you're effectively hauling a giant sail. A cross or head wind is going to kick your ass more than weight.

The optics of hauling a can on a deckover gooseneck just aren't great and an invitation for enforcement to pull out scales and ask some questions.

Odds aren't great of getting hassled but all it takes is one and you're dropping the trailer on the side of the road and paying for a transport anyway.

I bet it does 65 fine in 1:1 and no headwind. Lots of RV's these days are built right to 13'6" and getting pulled by gassers.

It won't be a pleasant experience if there is a significant crosswind or headwind for sure though. My SCSB 7.3 F250 was fine pulling my 40', relatively short, enclosed trailer until the wind kicked up. Then it sucked getting blown around and using the throttle as an on/off switch. Grossed right at 24k

Yes it has 456s.. hauling 16k I have no issue getting to 85. Took longer, sure... also needed more braking distance, that's unavoidable. But with 16k I got 7.3mpg in not flat terrain, trans only left 160 degrees once on the biggest grade and then it was 174.

Yeah it's going to be like pulling a sail boat with all the sails out.

I'm just thinking for this truck, even tho it's just 2000 pounds more... I'm way more comfortable with 16k V 18k... and maybe it is the bulkyness of a huge box with a 5 ft overhang out back.

The factory capacity on the PWs are down rated because of softer suspension. A regular 2500 gasser is 13.25k.... bags add to that, as well as the GN vs bumper.

Over weight, yes... but it's not like it's double.

E rated tires are 3200 pounds a piece. That's 6400, minus half the truck roughly conservative, which puts it at 3000... at the nominal of 10% load weight wanted on hitch that'd be 30k capable...

I don't disagree that's it's over weight, not the best idea, etc but it's not as bad as you make it sound... plus these newer trucks have ratings that are comparable to medium duty trucks back before I was born and those things pulled way more

So this just changed things.... I called the place to get a weight... they only listed the 40ft steel container but apparently are out of them...

They said next in line is box trailers they're scrapping out. Which supposedly is 50ftrs with steel frame, wood floors, composite sides and roof with aluminum ribs.

But the pic they sent makes me think aluminum not composite.

$700 but a fucking 15ft tail hangover!!!

Said weight was 3-4k

Negative. It's 4ft max rear overhang over trailer end.
we used to get an annual permit for the log truck for 8ft until I lengthened the stinger.

It woulda been fine if you just sent it, instead of asking about it:flipoff2:
The real pro gamer move it to wait until after you've successfully sent it to post a thread asking whether or not you can send it. Then once you've got all the Karens stirred up you hit them with the pics.

I have a 53ft van trailer. It's decent for storage and was cheap ($1800), but a PITA to climb in and out and forklifting heavy stuff like my Landa steam washer.
Considered cutting off the running gear, but then it'd be a huge PITA to move.

No idea on weight, my 5k forklift won't lift it at the kingpin end. Had to use my 977L
