ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP/WJLA) — Police in Virginia say that a rape suspect who was released from jail in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Ibrahim E. Bouaichi, went on to kill the woman who had accused him.
Last week, officers found a woman shot to death. It was Alexandria, Virginia's first homicide of the year. The victim was later identified as Karla Elizabeth Dominguez Gonzalez.
Bouaichi was indicted on rape charges last year and jailed without bond. Gonzalez testified against him in Alexandria District Court in December.
When the pandemic hit, Bouaichi’s lawyers argued that he should be freed while awaiting trial because the virus endangered both inmates and their attorneys.
Bouaichi was tracked down by authorities on Wednesday, August 5.
Alexandria police officers attached to the FBI's regional Violent Crimes Task Force spotted Bouaichi in Prince George's County, Maryland Wednesday morning.
When authorities chased him, Bouaichi crashed the car he was driving and was found inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Why was an accused violent rapist freed from jail? He's not even in the at risk age group.
