GM 14bFF 10.5" Hubs- Machining For 6 on 5.5 Applications (Resources)

To be clear, you will be over 500.00 having your hubs and drums machined, period. My guys can do it, but they're 125 an hour, with a 4 hour minimum to take a system out of standard production. Any machine shop that can do it will be the same price and backed up by 6 months or more.

So, what's wrong with 1T late model drum in hat disk brakes adapted to your axle or heck, a complete GM AAM based 14B?

Right Gear and Axle makes adapters to put late model drum in hat disk brakes on your 14b. I've done it.

Late model 10.5 and 11.5AAM axles are as wide as your front 60 at 69" WMS to WMS.

They are far better than either drum system you're discussing here. It's why the manufacturer incurred the cost to switch to them. You can also find parts at any parts store in the country.

The 72 K5 here has an 85 K30 SRW Dana 60 and a 2004 AAM 11.5" "14B" in it, with drum in hat disk brakes. Oh, and it has a disk/disk prop valve, which unless an ABS system controls, you need in any two circuit brake system. Also has a Cummins, so heavier and bigger than your pig. Stops a fuck ton better than the 13.5" drummed 14B it replaced. Parking brake also holds and self adjusts.

Or if you want to go heavier, pretty sure my IH will be about 11,500 lbs on 41" tires.

Modern brake systems are a hell of a lot better than the expensive shit you're trying to do to end up with shitty, fading brakes over the road.

Also, drop the bull shit. You come in here asking for help from some of the smartest fabricators/builders in the world and give shit back? This place and it's precedents are known for advancing the auto tech world, not retarding it.

The drive flange absolutely doesn’t “have” to be turned down.

No, I do not have a write up on how I converted my front D60 to drums as I left my D60f disk- only I downgraded from 1 ton dually brake assemblies to 3/4 ton rotors with ½ ton calipers and ½ ton pads. I actually have a bunch of “intended” YouTube Videos I had taken step by step because at the time no one had any videos on YouTube about the process. I had issues with the brakes not lining up and the caliper brackets. The issues were not to bad but got me off track on the videos and since the front brake caliper brackets are still rigged, I didn’t want to upload a half ass video series. I should upload that stuff one day- I need to see what is already out there as I would only upload mine if the others were lacking detail.

The hubs, caliper brackets, and rotors came from Solid Axle. The brackets only had 3 out of the four holes for the caliper slide bolts tapped. This was an easy fix as I just tapped it out- no problem just about every mechanic has at least a basic tap & die set. The irritating thing is that I emailed Solid about that and without being an asshole said that maybe they should double check stuff before they ship it out, you know- have a little better quality control. Dude went of on me and basically said that was impossible and the whole company pride speech.

With that knocked out, I started assembling. The second problem I ran into was that the calipers did not fit. Basically, Solid advertised their rotor and bracket package as fitting both ½ ton and ¾ ton brakes. Both style calipers will physically fit the brackets, but shit gets more technical as ¾ ton calipers use roughly a 1 ¼” rotor and ½ ton calipers use a 1” rotor. To use ½ ton calipers with Solid’s rotors you either need to by (or make) an offset bracket from a third party, or use a ¼ spacer(s), or grind ¼” of off your pads. 1” rotors from Sky fit perfectly but warped out way to easily- either because of the metallurgy or being too thin (though my Corporate 10 front didn’t warp out quite so fast.) Granted, ½ ton rotors generally never work well long term on traditional heavy ½ ton trucks, but Sky’s took the taco for early failure. Both companies are proprietary about their suppliers so knowing the iron type is kind of a shot in the dark. But I commend Solid for finally adding more detailed rotor specs even if it took my PITA ass to keep riding them about it. Granted, just buying your own rotors and milling/having them milled out would be a better option, but I have not gotten that far yet. As of right now, I run with the Solid rotors (warp free) and two 1/8” washers at each mounting point as a half ass spacer (no issues whatsoever with strength, but again I don’t do backwards cart wheels down rocks.)

I tried to explainall of this to Solid and they strait up told be it was tested with ½ ton calipers and I told them no way- just read what I am telling you. Solid, to date, has been the rudest company I have ever dealt with and to this day I refuse to do any further business with them out of principle. After YEARS of me heckling them, they finally updated their website in a way that is much less misleading, but still not incredibly clear about this. I intentionally bought my cast D60f 8 on 6.5 hubs from their competition (my factory hubs are dually) knowing that Solids were forged, again out of principle.

The only other issue I had, non-parts related, was fitment. My 82’ was a factory ½ ton diesel and had a factory 2” lift with heavier duty springs- though still 52” out back. Between the extra diameter of the D60f axle tubes (vs. my Corporate 10f) and the caliper bracket spacing I now rubbed with 33” BFR M/Ts and has to slightly massage my fender corners. Not a big deal, but I was always proud of the fact that I could just run 33x12.5x15s on a 15x10” rims without a lift- big boy rig fringe benefits. I have always scratched my head at people who spend money on a lift to run 33s… A 15x8 rim would have been fine and BFG A/Ts on 15x10s fit fine.

Granted this issue is almost commonly known, but I will add it. ¾” calipers clear 15” rims. 3/4” calipers will not clear most 15” aluminum rims. All 15” aluminum rims will require both ½ and ¾ ton calipers to be grinded down. Most 15” aluminum rims will not clear grinded ¾” calipers because of the larger piston and the repositioning of the piston in relation to the mounted caliper position. My aluminum rims would have required an amount of grinding that would have left me uncomfortable with what would have been left and I ran and still run ½ ton calipers with ½ ton pads.

I would expect to pay a premium for a service that I am at mercy to pay for. At a starting rate of two days’ worth of the average mans’ pay, however, you better believe that I would expect at least that I would receive said items in operable condition- no eating your mistakes in that case. I don’t mind paying that, after all you pay to play… but there is not an ounce of humanity figured into that estimate. I don’t blame you- if you didn’t hit hard with an opening fee followed by a final unknown fee possibly you wouldn’t have the ability to brag about your IH. That just automatically makes you an expert, right?? Looks to me like you are bleeding money- I would have some pretty impressive toys myself if I was bleeding money. I am trying to keep my rig as period correct as possible, so know on the tips… but you wouldn’t know that because you are assuming based of loose details. In the military we have a saying “Don’t assume, because if you do you will make an ass out of you and me.”

I have a pair of first gen 14 bolt srw hubs that I machined to 6 on 139.7mm for my Toyota. I’ve since upgraded to a super duty front axle and swapped everything over to 8 on 170 so I’m not using the hubs anymore.

Possibly it would just be easy to paint me as the bad guy PITA who you would not offer your services to rather than facing the reality of have nothing of original post value to contribute…

That is a good point, this probably should be moved into the "Wanted" forum. My bad. I guess I was thinking tech because I was asking for a tech service as opposed to buying used parts, but I agree. Some tech did make its way into the thread though as a biproduct of others drifting the topic. I think you are assuming that I only have one truck, and only own one set of off road tires. Most of the guys on here who readily offer non-requested, alternative solutions for me (that can EASILY be found by anyone not scared to use the search engine while leaving this hyperfocused post more to the point for future members who know how to use the search engine) tend to do the same- just like others are assuming that any parts that I have and or want will all only be used on "one" of my trucks.

I am only running 33's on my 82' because I prefer durability- that will change once I get my 14bff into my 82'... with a working big boy parking brake. My 82' is not my primary off-roader, so tire size is of less relevance at the moment. I currently use this truck for towing and to transport engines- my cherry picker likes the 33s. My 14bsf will come out and go into my K5 Blazer because it is still a 1/2 ton.

Trying to throw a tech post together with a list of resources is like pulling teeth. Some will argue that machinists will not come forward because I am a PITA to deal with. I would argue that if such machinists proudly and competently exist they would appreciate the notoriety of saying so within this post- even if they say "but I refuse to do perform those services for the OP."
