Fuggin ticks

Damn things are everywhere at my house. Wife had a deer tick on her last week, I had a dog one yesterday. Hate them, can barely enjoy outside. We have a ton of deer in the yard if we go out we always get a few.

I got teh limes like 15 years back. I think it's like 1 in 3 deer ticks have it now.
I got it a few years back from one that latched on my knee. Seems early summer the dogs were bringing them in daily but thankfully haven’t seen one for a few weeks. Hate the damn things!

Prior to this year I've never had a tick on me. Now I've had about a half dozen. All dog ticks.

Weirdest was one in early February and it was dug in. Hadn't started sucking any blood yet, but it was in there. We did have the earliest 80° day this year...in February. Most were after going in the pucker brush to check/empty the coon traps.

Vet is recommending flea/tick/heartworm meds for dogs year round now because they are so prevalent. Remi was already on them all year, now Sig will be also.

In general, May and June are the bad months for ticks. That's when they are moving around a lot. I don't remember if it's from hatching or laying eggs, whichever. They slow down after that.

This year it was more April and May because of "global warming".

As for prevention...I have this thing about applying poison to myself. Never bothered when West Nile showed up. I don't believe in sunscreen either.

Just something about applying chemicals to my skin when my pores will be opening up and allowing that crap to get into my body doesn't seem right.

Seems like there are much more of them recently. When I was younger we would be outside everywhere all day and find one occasionally. Now it's a guarantee. Might just be my specific location is prime, idk.

Warm weather in the winter does keep more of them alive. We've had 2 warm winters in a row.

I live, work, and play in the woods. I use this on clothing, hottest deet i can get on skin.

Sawyer Products SP657 Premium Permethrin Insect Repellent for Clothing, Gear & Tents, Trigger Spray, 24-Ounce

This stuff works. No detectable scent. You spray your clothes and let it dry, you clothes are then good for a couple of washes.

I was out at our property last weekend. Wife and I sprayed our pants the night before, but we didn't spray my 2 year old daughters clothes as we didn't know if it was safe for kids. Daughter got deep woods off when we got out of the truck. We picked 4 ticks off my daughter crawling on her clothes and zero off the wife and myself.

I blanket spray the part of the property that gets mowed regularly when it turns from warm to hot in the spring, and once again about 90 days later. Bifen XTS. It kills everything, ticks, chiggers, spiders, ground wasps, the works. Getting them on the dog has been a regular occurrence until I put him on Bravecto this year, so far I haven't picked a single one off him. Even at my brother's place in OK that's covered in woods. He'd come home from there with a half dozen every single trip. Now, nothing.

This year was real bad for scorpions out at the deer lease. Sprayed bifen out there in May, haven't seen another one.

Chlordane was some good shit. Used to spray the yard and you wouldn't find nothing in it. No tick, spiders, ants....nothing.

But as with everything else that actually works....can't have that.

Just zombies. Lol

'lab leak'
wasn't it an intentional release to track tick propagation rate?
Could have been. Look into Plum Island New York. Some theories speculate that Nazi scientists brought to the US developed and released Lyme. Some say there's no proof and it's a conspiracy their. Who knows at this point.

Can't be 100% sure, but this year after sticking to a carnivore diet, I have yet to get a mosquito bite, or any ticks. I was just in Oregon were all my family doing the same work as me in the brush, etc all got several ticks. In the evening when mosquitoes were out, they were swarmed.
I can't attribute it to anything besides my diet, but then again I could be wrong. I also use no repellant.

The Permethrin spray from Sawyer on your clothes is definitely the way to go. I now use that on my clothes (socks, pants, shirt), along with 95%+ DEET spray on my body. One caution is that Permethrin is very toxic to cats, so keep the spray and the clothes away from any cats (assuming you aren't trying to poison them) until everything is dry. At that point it is supposed to be safe, but I typically try an be cognizant of leaving any of my hiking stuff laying around in the house where one of the cats could potentially come in contact/lay on it.

I spend a LOT of time in the woods off-trail and pretty much every trip out during the summer you would come home w/ at least a couple. I used to not use anything, but one trip last month I came back with 17 ticks :( Some were picked of during the day, but I found like a dozen when I got back home that night and did a thorough inspection and I decide that it was time to make some changes. Since using the Permethrin sprayed clothes and the DEET I haven't had any more show up.

Ticks in general weird me out a bit, but seed ticks are another level of :barf:

I usually don't have too much problems with skeeters, without applying poison to myself. Family is usually bitching about all the skeeters while I get 1 or 2.

So another (conspiracy) theory that I have is that the massive increase of ticks could be from all the new designer pesticides that are in use.

I had a theory that I came up with close to 10 years ago that all these new pesticides (neonics) were causing a decline in pollinators that everyone is whining about. And then there's the whole no mow May bullshit. And now we have states banning the use of these neonics.

But 30+ years ago when the "good" stuff was in use, such as organophosphates, and these pesticides were blanket applied all over, we didn't have the pollinator problems. Or ticks. Or skeeters that carried every freaking disease known to mankind.

And if you really want a cool conspiracy theory, I had bookmarked a link by some science group, out of Arizona I believe, that had quite the interesting take on DDT and how it had never been proven that it caused the thin shelled eggs, etc.

Forgot to mention, I'm sure my dad used chlordane more than once. He also used Malathion which isn't quite as strong as chlordane, but it sure killed every insect it came in contact with.

We use bifenthrin and an insect growth regulator when treating skeeters. It will also kill ticks and fleas. But we get a solid month of good control out of that mix.

A few years back my wife was camping with my sisters...skeeters were unreal. She asked if I could take our mister out and spray (state campground). I was swarmed when I stepped out of the truck. Fired it up and sprayed around her and their campsites...they were skeeter free while everyone around them was swatting away.

the moment after I read this I lifted my right pant leg

Why don't you have chickens? They're cheap and if you leave them to roam you won't have bugs. As a bonus they leave you breakfast!

You really don't need to feed them much if at all if they're free to roam. Perfect for your cheap ass! :flipoff2:

My buddy in Brainerd got 15 chickens after his kids got Lyme. He hasn't seen a tick since, but he gets another 5-10 chicks every spring to replace the ones that wonder off and never come back.

meh, neighbor had chickens, they disappeared over time
other neighbor has chickens and they don't seem to be disappearing any more, the coyotes are still making a racket every night, dunno why they ain't getting ate

Dunno man. Not really an animals kinda guy.

I fog with bifenthrin at my buddies house but the main problem is his krombopolous dog that kills tons of shit in the yard which the ticks love, and my little pussy dog loves rolling in.

If you're going to be standing in one place for a while, you can spray the whole area down with Raid and there will be no bugs....:flipoff2:

I apparently walked through a flock of chiggers today… I’m thinking 60 grit on a belt sander should address the itching??

The free range chickens works, but they shit everywhere, and then they roost in the damndest places. Found a tick on the dog this spring and doc gave me some oral meds for her, and we haven’t found one since. I say we, her groomer hasn’t found another one since then. I’m pretty surprised I have never found one at my place in Idaho, it’s pretty f’n wild there, and lots of animals parade through, but been tick free for several years now. I bet next weekend when I’m there I’ll get one now though. I have the same affect on skeeters also. The wife slept with a face net and got 4 bites on her forehead, and I slept without covers and got zero.

I have (thankfully) never experienced them.

I remember my grandfathers stories about them in Oklahoma. I recall a lot of kerosene being used, I was too young to clarify if it was used on him, or the chiggers :homer:

good luck. they itch like no other. ive used clear nail polish, salt mixed into vicks vapor rub, but i think the OTC Chigger Rid stuff works the best.

good luck

a flock of chiggers
That’s racist. “Chegroes” is the acceptable term.
Side note, this is my go to for stings, rashes, bites or anything of unknown origin. It Always helps.

Use lavender oil. Its safe for people of all ages, kills ticks, prevents their eggs from hatching and you'll smell better.

You can save some cash buy buying the 10% permethrin livestock spray at the farm store and mixing it with water in a spray jug.
