2014 6.7, 70k, all stock. Oil temp never went above coolant temp, roughly 225. 120*+ AZ summer, 7% grades, 37s, cab over camper, towing boat, 19k+ CGWV.

Then 5 years ago it started showing high oil temps to 255. Even empty it runs at 240. They drop quickly on downslope, coasting.

I believe that a freeze plug has pushed out of it's bore and allows the oil to bypass the liquid-to-oil cooler mounted on the upper oil pan. I have found a few threads on the interwebs on this. Fix is pull engine or trans to R&R the upper oil pan. Pain in the ass, so I just keep an eye on temps and roll with it.

Anyone hear of this? Fixed it?

WWID?

Otherwise truck has been trouble free.

I saw 239* F going to Colorado in my '22 before the cooling fan kicked on, several times...

edit: disregard my post, I got this thread confused with another one.

My service truck started doing exactly what you described a few years ago. My company decided to ignore the problem and we have never had an issue besides the high oil and trans temp readings. Truck is gone now but not because of that.

well guys finally figured out the problem. i hope this tread can help or at least point some one in the right direction on day.

There was a failure in the oil pan, basically the oil gets sucked up from the sump then runs through the oil filter then over to the oil cooler keep in mind these oil jackets are built into the pan. after the oil cooler the oil runs to the crank. There is a freeze plug design that separates the wall in the pan from the oil cooler entrance and oil cooler exit, the freeze plug was pushed dislodged. thus not allowing the oil to flow properly. some oil went through the cooler some didn't.
see pictures below. to do this job the transmission has to be pulled book time is roughly 8.5 hours.

This problem began happening about 1000 miles after install.

now let me tell you about my experience with ford. To understand this you'll need to know the motor was punched from a dealer, but all catastrophic motor failures run through ford powertrain warranty.

So when the problem was found i contacted powertrain warranty and explained the situation after about 30 minutes of arguing with them about wanting a new motor because the motor ran for a few hundred miles with high oil temps because of a failed pan they absolutely refused to replace the motor because it was still operable. the told me to contact the dealer for parts and labor warranty.

contacted the dealer, the parts manager agreed with me that the motor should in-fact be replaced as well, he then contacted powertrain. About an hour latter he calls me back and explained that powertrain would not replace the motor under warranty because 240-290 isn't that hot and the truck did what it was supposed to do and shutt off before it could reach dangerous temps. the dealer then agreed to warranty the parts and labor.

The motor is still under 2 year unlimited mile warranty.

Everything was documented via email for the future. truck is up and running now after 2 days of dealing with warranty. temp won't go above 206 now.

Interesting.

Doesn't seem like an easy fix seeing how trans or engine has to come out for this repair. Sucks.
