Did it burst? Why so long for surgery? The three people that I know who's burst had surgery immediately, but they were in their 20s.
i learned a lot about the appendix this week. its not like a balloon that bursts, its more that its part of your large intestine, when it gets a blockage, then the bacteria attack the walls of the appendix and eventually it ruptures or perforates and you get bacteria and infection in the body cavity and have puss and it attacks the outside of the intestine.
usually in kids under 5, its impossible for them to not have a ruptured appendix because they can't express and localize the pain, everything is just "my tummy hurts". so by the time i realized it wasnt a stomach bug or that fact he had ate a whole handful of sour patch kids, it had progressed and who knows when it had ruptured.
as to why they waited so long, it was 2-3 pm after ultrasound, xray and CT scan to confirm appendicitis. they took us to another hospital where the pediatric surgeries happen. they were very booked up all afternoon and evening and he could not get in. The doctor told me the chance of complications is low, but does happen sometimes. but when it happens, they can overcome them (save the kids life) as long as they have a full team present. i assume thats surgeons, nurses, PAs, the whole thing, if they are operating after 8 pm, typically they dont have that full staff to overcome this. so they just dont operate unless its life or death. in his case, he was in a shitload of pain and they were morphine him all night long, but he was getting antibiotic IV and pain meds and it was going to suck but he could wait.
thats all i have to say about that.
Hang in there buddy. He's got a great Dad.
Thanks friend, i appreciate it.
