What's new

fj40 iam looking at, possible diamond in the ruff....

amen to that

the first pics he shaded it looked like a blue quarter panel but when i get there and look at it, its just a tacked on panel over rust like the pass side. kinda of a bummer for sure.
if he was willing to part it out he maybe able to get what he wants

Bumping for FJ40 talk.

A friend of mine has been offered a running driving FJ40, but similar condition rust-wise, $500 from his uncle. Even if its running and driving is it worth doing anything with? I told him buy a tube notcher and we could cut out the BS and make a firewall style buggy. I've seen a few "no bend" tube chassis builds and figured we could come up with something to make a wheeler with.

Is there anything good about them? Didn't sound like they're easily built for wheeling from the above info. I have some old DOT 38" TSLs that I'd likely donate to the cause, or will the front end go? :nuke: Maybe better off with 35" UTV tires?

He's got a couple of friends with Samurais on Yota axles that play in the woods, so thats the level of build I'd assume, not hardcore 43" sticky and tons crowd

If he's willing to chop it up, go for it.

Depending on the year it'll need a disc swap up front, but with a spring-over and some 36-38" rubber it would be a fun wheeler to play around with. Either weld the diffs or swap in lunchboxes. Gears would help, but whatever... 3:1 T-case gears are available. It'll eat front birfields, but that's a Toyota - upgrade chromoly birfs and shafts are common.

Shit, I'd buy a $500 driving 40 and do the same thing.

500 i would have bought this one. and if i only used the hood and front grill i would have be pleased.

with that being said when you get deep into them they have certain level of function over
comfort aspect that is neat as hell. hell you can pull an inspection pan on the side of the block. my old fuel pump had a primer to pump gas if it sat along time. there is a hand crank that goes on the harmonic balancer and you can turn the engine over to adjust valves easy. super cool in that respect.
