Ok, so the Mrs. and I were discussing bailing on good ole upstate NY. Houses are selling like hotcakes to the Citidiots, so say we sold ours for $100k. We own it free and clear, so for the sake of argument we have $100k in an account.

Where would the best place be to go and buy cash 100% again. Financing isnt an option (fuck a mortgage)

Choices are:

West Virgina
Carolinas
Louisiana

Why there? Dunno. Live life and explore, I guess. We havent been there before (lived in CA, TX NY now and AZ Prior)

A little more insight.

The Mrs and I are. HS sweethearts in CA (Ojai)

I got offered a job in Ft Worth TX, so we went. Never been to TX before. Stayed there a few years until we popped out a kiddo, and went to AZ, where my parents lived.

AZ got crowed after 14 years so said screw it! Moved to NY state because....why not. Other than my $13k car loan, we are debt free.

So Upstate is ok, but lacking, seriously lacking in the church life. I havent been in 2 years. The churches here are solidly stuck in the 60s, and I cant stand it anymore. We met with our pastor to discuss any intentions of bringing the church to a more modern type, his hands are tied (hes recently from LA, CA) He blames Covid, and the Congregations unwillingness to accept change.

My wife and kids attend sundays at the local church, I went to work Sun/Wed as I am missing nothing at church services here.

So, after a two year spirutual hiatus, no plans from the local churches to be anything more than bland services and hymnals, I think the mrs and I are out.

I think in WV they have churches with poisonous snakes to spice things up.

property might be cheap later this week in East TX and Louisiana :D

Ive almost posted the same thread. We are looking to leave as well. Going to WV next month to see propertys with min 100 acres. Problem with it is it would totally change my business. I've made good money here and own everything, but can't stomach the idea of I'd pay 200,000 in the next 10 years property tax at the current rate. I'd be getting somewhere between 600k-800k for the house if I fixed up the landscaping. WV has always been a place i liked and felt free. Mountains, isolation, weather, history. Just a feeling I get driving through those hills.

What do you do for work?

start a home church, you cant be the only one in the congregation who feels this way. if you dont want to do that, start a mens group to test the waters.

WOW, I have no idea homes were so affordable upstate!

The reason they are so affordable is the oppressive property taxes - so not really that affordable when you add that in. nothing like owning a $40k house with a $500/mo tax bill.

I have family in that area of NY. I got out of there as quick as I could and I can't see any reason why someone would stay there.
100k isn't much in other parts of the country.
Greenville, SC, Rogersville, TN is where I'd start looking.

Even in East Texas 100k wont buy you anything nice right now. Ive got a friend looking to spend 2-2.5x that and everything she schedules a viewing of is selling before she can even see it. It's crazy. She finally got one bought this week after it was taken off the market and the first buyer didn't close. She was next in line.

Im open to land purchase/build a home as well.

We bought our house as a fixer upper, for a steal. Its fixed now.

Our Village, Town and School taxes run approx $2600 a year combined. Not great, but not New Jersey bad either.

The whole state of Louisiana is a shithole.

Louisiana experienced the highest per capita murder rate (11.4 per 100,000) among all U.S. states in 2018 for the 30th consecutive year (1989–2018), according to The 2018 FBI Uniform Crime Report. Louisiana averaged 13.7 murders per 100,000, compared to the U.S. average of 6.6 murders per 100,000 from 1989- 2014.

CDL carrier. Currently work for a local municipality. I have driven dump trucks, to working for Waste Management.

The whole state of California is a shithole.

California

• Violent crime rate: 447.4 per 100,000 people

• Total 2018 murders: 1,739 (the highest)

• Imprisonment rate: 424 adults per 100,000 (19th lowest)

• Poverty rate: 12.8% (25th highest)

• Most dangerous city: Emeryville

There were 176,982 cases of rape, robbery, murder, and aggrevated assault committed in California in 2018, more violent crimes than in any other state. Of course, California is also the most populous state, but violent crime is still disproportionately high. The state is home to about 12% of the U.S. population but is also the site of about 14% of all violent crimes.

Despite a greater concentration of serious crimes, the state has a lower incarceration rate than most states. There are just 424 adults in California state and federal prisons for every 100,000 state residents 18 and over, below the 568 per 100,000 average across all states.

I don't understand why you don't start your own church. You don't even have to be the Pastor, get some hungry kid out of Seminary to do it.

FYI, down South, all new churches start in strip-malls anyway, usually old crusty ones way out of the way, like on that exit that no one uses with the abandoned gas station and an old Wendy's. I know they have that in NY.

I would consider OK. The northern part any way.

I would love to. But I dont have any formal training, nor experience dealing with the headaches of running a church, even as just a owner/Elder type deal. The idea of going into untold thousands of dollars of debt for a 4 year pastoral degree conflicts highly with my cheapness:lmao:

I wanted a "travel" car, since my ol truck is a 160k mile 04 F250.

I stomached a budget of $10k. Ended up with a 17 Civic with 30k miles for $13k. About the cheapest I could find without going with a Chevy Cruze. I wasnt cheap enough to go Hyundai.

lets put it this way, regarding strip mall churches. Theres no strip malls near me. Our house was built in 1870, as was most of the village.

Its a lovely community...but its darn near stuck in 1870 still

Get the fuck outta here with that bullshit. New Orleans proper and parts of Baton Rouge make up 90% of that statistic. The rest of Louisiana is pretty good. That's like me saying California is complete shit hole basing my opinion on LA, Oakland, and San Francisco.

But because of those places, it is a shit hole

But but but that's only in a few major (all of them) cities...

STFU ski, surf and have your house burned down in a wild fire the same day:flipoff2:

You'd fit in in Oklahoma.

I was thinking OK too. Several modern churches to choose from in Bartlesville when I lived there and thought I might like to try them.

It's been some years but $100k would buy a 2-3 bed home with 2 car garage there.

I'll remember that the next time you rag on California.

Maybe somewhere shitty in SC. Suburbs of spartenburg?? South georgia, but work down there matches the housing prices

North GA and WNC isnt going to find much for 100k that isnt a fixer upper or tiny/on wheels.

$100k aint much for a house nowadays. Might want to wait and see if the economy tanks.
