Has anybody ever heard of this? Basically, you hold the vehicle at WOT while starting it. It is supposed to turn off the injectors to prime the oil pump after letting your vehicle sit.

Isn't this how all of us have always checked compression?
I thought it was basic knowledge for most vehicles.

I wonder how beneficial that would be programmed in as part of the normal start-up, whatever minimal cranking time to prime then fires.

That's a thing - our 3 fuel injected vehicles all have that feature.

Might wanna Google your specific vehicle unless you like "coffee can full of marbles" noises :flipoff2:

The old TBI Chevy's were like that. Without enough oil pressure they wouldn't turn on the spark. :flipoff2:

They lasted fine usually, but they were a whooping 210hp at the crank, so they weren't making huge power either :lmao:

Clear flood mode.
I would never thought about using this to build oil pressure. Probably not going to do it either.

Needed oil pressure to turn on the fuel pump.

Source? I used to do quite a bit with GM TBI stuff and never ran across that. You get spark even without a PCM present, the PCM just trims the advance through the EST duty cycle once the PCM wakes up.

I've always pulled the fuel pump fuse and bled the fuel rail pressure to crank an engine and prime the oil pump. I had no idea this was a thing.

Would a early 2000's Ford 5.4l have this? I have one that's not been started in a year.

I'm not sure...

The owners manual for my 2001 Super duty has this as a cold weather procedure:

3. If the temperature is below -12° C (10° F) and the engine does not
start in 15 seconds on the first try, turn the key OFF and wait 10
seconds and try again. If the engine does not start in two attempts, press
the accelerator pedal all the way to floor and hold. Turn the key to
START position.
4. When the engine starts, release the key, then release the accelerator
pedal gradually as the engine speeds up.

Flood clear, yes, never heard of doing it to use the starter to prime the oil pump but I guess it makes sense that you could do it like that. My own stuff, if it's been down/apart enough that I feel the need to prime the oil pump, I've pulled the distributor to do it. Now I'm curious how to do that on something that drives the oil pump differently, and I'm guessing this would be the way.

just start it and give her some redline for a good time before it sees oil pressure
maybe check the oil level later on
it'll be fiiiine

Yes I used it the other day after I changed the oil pump on my 3.6l JKUR. It also has bump start. So you hold the gas to the floor, tap the key, engine cranks automatically for 10 seconds and then stops.

I did it 3 times while watching the oil pressure to make sure the new pump was working and primed properly.

Also not a bad idea if the vehicle has been sitting for a week or longer.

The 3.6L Jeep engine oil filter doesn’t have a built in bypass valve so the oil drains away when it sits.

Reminds me of jeep 4L how many rotations till it wakes up?

I wouldn’t bother. it gets 30 sec of idle time and gently it goes. TC locks up when it reaches op temp 3 miles later.

fuel pump

Apparently I was wrong. I knew it wouldn't start without oil pressure either way :homer:
