I'm rebuilding a 4BT that came with a known rod knock. The ENTIRE oiling system is full of grease, from the oil passages to the grooves in the main bearing shells, as well as the turbo lines and turbo itself. I had to pull the plugs on the main oil gallery and run a rod across it to remove the grease. Why on earth would anyone do such a thing?

On a similar note, one of the rod journals is damaged beyond the min undersize bearing range. Is it expensive to get a journal welded and ground?

spray welding is a thing, shouldn't be horrible, but a used crank will likely be cheaper if you can find one local
I'd imagine around 500 bucks to spray weld one journal and grind them if the mains don't gotta be touched

Just got a 3 cyl Ford tractor crank back from welding a rod and grinding rod/mains - cost $400 for that one, $300 for the 2 that just needed grinding. Local drunk guy took 6 months to do it though. I'd guess $500-750 for a 4B, but it's also probably one of those things that's highly variable depending on location. Agkits has a new 4B crank for $620+$75 shipping. Not sure if it's ground or new aftermarket. I'd be cautious using their parts for a high power road engine, but for construction/industrial use that may be the cheapest/easiest option.

What about rig up a system with oil pan draining into a bucket with pump to circulate diesel through the oiling system through one of ports on top of oil filter housing?

nope, just gotta rod the galleys out and hot tank the whole damn thing
especially since it has rod bearing and crankshaft metal floating around in the pan

Now that i pulled the gallery plugs I can powerwash the oiling system quite effectively.

What about just cranking the regulator up to 150psi and hit the oil port with a rubber tipped blow gun? Couldn't possibly make THAT big of a mess, right? :lmao:

probably someone decided to pre-lube the bearings with a grease gun hooked to the oil gauge port
That was going to be my guess.

Does the color of grease indicate anything to anyone? I’ve been mechanicing for a long time and have never held a tube of grease that color. Have always used the red Mystik for cheap grease.

Valve greasers use that vanilla colored stuff that comes in the 15 gallon mini barrels.

the problem is the dead ends in the galleys, they hold onto particulate and crap to kill your next set of bearings

“Breadfan, open up your mind, open up your purse, open up your bones, never, never gonna lose it”. Sorry. Has no bearing on this subject but it made me think of Metallica’s cover of that song.
First thought I had as well.

agreed.

I think its cheap wheel bearing grease. I used to have a tub of it that looked like caramel.

it just looks like cheap lithium grease to me
that used to be the color of all the cheap stuff around here, but recently (oh, maybe five or ten years) it turned to this dark purple-gray

i did swap my engine oil for heavy gear oil that i had on hand, when my slant 6 had more than a matchstick slop in the rocker shaft. quietened it down enough to get a good trade in price. ve regal valiant

Looks exactly like military GAA (Grease, Automotive and Artillery).

We put that shit on everything, including battery terminals.

(Its lithium-based)
