Engine block bolt extraction in Colorado Springs

Have you seen a drunk english working on a Defender ?
You can fix a Defender with a flatblade screwdriver and a lump hammer. These new Range Rovers are a whole different world of shit.

I’m sharing all the ideas with him. He's prob in over his head but I’m trying to be helpful.

Thanks for the ideas so far

Edit a shop and a seller screwed him over

He bought it under the impression that a specialist shop did the timing chains and stuff correctly. Got it from halfway across the US and 3000 miles later it started rattling and he found this.

I personally don’t trust anyone so I just buy them already blown up.
I tried to help fix one that got put on marketplace for “electric issues”. Was a beautiful machine for cheap. Tinkered with it on and off for a year and it got given up on. Fuck those things.

i could get it out without a lot of issues, travel cost would be a bitch though. Tell him to go check with the local boat shops, its not salt corroded stainless steel in aluminum, so its not that big of a deal, the local boat shops should have a guy that could get it out. The local machine shop used to send broken bolts to me

I'd probably give him a call if he was local and could bring it to me

Just tig 'something' to the bolt and extract it. Since the replacement bolt is a flanged bolt, I'd imagine it doesn't matter that 25% of the bolt hole surface is messed up, probably just run it

Now that the help tag is down.

It’s a Euro trash Rover. That metric bolt made of a garbage alloy is butter soft. Probably got over torqued by whoever was the lowest bidder (lowest common denominator as well) no torque wrench. Reused the torque to yield bull shit fastener. Broke at the first thread past the solid shank.

I bet it drills out so easy you wouldn’t believe it. Probably twist right out with a left hand bit. If not, a spriral extractor will spin it right out. Second Biggest issue is drill cuttings getting into the oil pan. First biggest issue is 1/3 of that boss on the block is now gone. With a new proper bolt it “might” hold. If not, you’re back to square one.

I* have to convince him to do it.

A shop messed it up. Supposedly some well world reknown rover shop in Michigan. I’d never heard of them.

I buy them after it fails for VERY cheap.

That looks like the bolt and boss broke off DURING OPERATION, not during disassembly. If the pic your posted left is up, then that thing snapped off while driving down the road. This is way over "hey come help me in my driveway" kindof thing. He needs a tow to a reputable shop and whip out the check book.

Or, since hes in CS, someone needs to drag that thing up into the mountains and push it off a cliff, then he reports it stolen. While leaving his phone on his living room couch sofa. In minecraft.

Drill bolt out. Clean hole well with brake cleaner. Insert new bolt with JB weld so it will stay. Consider it a throw away motor if it fails again.

Yes it failed when he was driving. It was improperly installed. The guide has two floating bolts on each end and that middle one is a tighter fit that it “rotates” on. So it was either overtorqued (I’m guessing this because I’ve seen other ones broken off) or not torqued.

99% of shops including “Land Rover” ones suck. They are fine vehicles when properly repaired. Mine don’t have any of the stupid issues because fix them correctly.

Hes capable of the job minus the setback of a broken bolt.
