A guy I’ve talked too in the Land Rover group on FB needs a bolt extracted on the front of a motor. One of the timing guide bolts broke off. To save him from having to tow the car or pull the motor. 99% sure it will need a thread insert too.

Suggestions?

I don’t need how to do it, he needs someone that can help him. 😂

See red circled.

First pic is 90* off left is up.

Weld a nut to it. It will come right out. There's a special rod that builds a stud really easily. Spray everything with anti spatter and use painters tape/ mask off everything important.

I don’t need advice on how to do it I know how to get it out. This guy doesn’t and needs someone to come do it for him.

There's a few service truck Facebook groups. You could search on there and find a guy that can get it done. Just make sure they've done it before..

it maybe too late but these mo fo s just plain work

the round bits on the lower left side of the red box are drill bit guides. take the one that is closest to the exact size of the hole and use the correct drill bit and drill the center of the bolt. if there is enough bolt then drill the next size up. pound in the long rod next to the drill bit and use extror to work out the stud. again hopefully not too late

I drilled a rounded off wheel bolt from my BMW.

I drew drill guides in fusion and 3d printed them kept the drill centered and square. Worked awesome. I printed an outer "collar" for the centering, then an inner bushing for the drill itself.
I'd probaby do the same thing there, print a guide that goes around the OD of that boss, with a step in it that hits end of the boss to keep it all square.

It may be worth drilling it out and a try at a thick ez -lok, but not much more effort than that. With nothing but a center punch to center a hole off of with that wallered out hole, IMHO that block is junk unless extremely lucky.

what model is it? My normal advice is that if the interior and exterior are pristine, sell it broken on eBay for whatever it sells for.

If not, scrap metal.

A Land Rover timing job is not an amateur diy driveway project. He is going to be sorry. Im 25 years into my career as a mechanic, and I wont touch those fucking piles. +1 for fire.
Anything is easy if you're not trying to beat book time. :flipoff2:

Also, did he already try to drill it, or is that just a shitty casting?
Looks like the bolt broke, and the force+time+vibration of that chain guide pushing away from the chain eventually walked through that part of the boss. If someone hit that with a drill already, they didn’t touch the bolt at all and just drilled the thread boss. I’m betting on the former and not the latter.
