Finally started to work on the gate to block off the driveway after the drunk driver hit my vehicles in the driveway and to stop multiple people from turning around in my driveway. On average we get 3-4 a week at night that turn around in the driveway and somehow nobody has hit my cars yet. Very much doubt they would leave a note.

Construction
2in x 2in x .125 square tubing
19ft overall length
2 - 7in barrel hinges for mounting

Main post: I have the 4x4 already but someone is selling the 6x6 on facebook for 450 for 24ft.
4in x 4in x .5in square tubing
or
6in x 6in x .5in square tubing
6 feet in ground due sandy soil
~2 Cu yards of concrete

Gate mechanism
Mighty mule MM571w
Solar power charge with battery

Onto some build pictures. The fixture table was awesome to use during the build.

12ft 4in length x 4ft height about.

Cheated some on marking angle for bandsaw

Test layout on the driveway. Still missing the second part of the gate. The road ends right into my driveway but only 2.5 houses are on the road including mine.

I used the fireball spacers to align the bar to the right out before using a sharpy to mark the angle to cut on the horizontal bandsaw. Cheating but easy.

Additional supports welded into place to help stiffen up gate to avoid sag. Transferred the angle using sharpy again before cutting with saw.

Second part of the gate. I used the fireball magic square in the lower right hand area to match the angle from the first gate part.

Seem to turn out well so far. I plan to place a spring return hinge in the middle to allow the gate to flex some if the garbage truck backs into it. They get close to the concrete edge during trash pickup.

Should've just stolen a couple chevrons from somewhere.
What fun would that have been. I used the gate as the reason I needed the table. Wife saw right thru that excuse......:lmao:

Now to more fucking around. The welding table seems more like adult legos which means I needed to find more reasons to use it.

Needed a base for the tube. Normally I would weld a flat plate on the tube then sit it on a cinder block before pouring concrete in.......I had some scrap material instead.

More fucking around. I also need to clean my garage. Tube is 10ft long

Your level of fucking around is awesome

Does this design (gate) meet the wife's approval? It's pretty missionary for your skill/tooling set.
So far it does. She also knows that I will be playing around on the digger.

What did that lift used to be?
Its a standard hydrualic lift table I got at a auction for $50. The thing is amazing for moving stuff around or adjusting the height of stuff when doing work. I cut the handle off to allow it to be stored under some shelves.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who does this shit.

I'll spend more money then it would just cost me to pay someone to do the work sometimes.

How do you not have another forklift? Even a little electric straddlejack would work well with the space you have.
Fuck if I know. Every time I'm about to buy one I come up with a large purchase instead. CNC lathe, Gang tooling, Welding table and the list goes on but it would make my life so much easier if I just bought one. I would need to expand the sidewalk going into the backyard to fit the width but that has been on a list for awhile. Walk behind would be perfect.

Buddy and I managed to get the hole dug today after renting a mini-excavator from home depot. Ran into a surprise right away but at least it was a good one.

Found 2 PVC pipes running under the driveway and one had power. Found with the mini-excavator. I will need to trace out tomorrow to see if they ran it to the circuit breaker panel or ended it somewhere in the gravel on the other side. Still excited to see power under the driveway.

Empty into bed of Chevy 2500HD truck.

2 runs to the dump at about 2500 lbs each. Fucking dump charged me for pure dirt when it should be free. I should have just dumped down a dirt road but job stops me from doing that.

Going to be a good amount of concrete.

Be laughing if someone runs into it tonight.
Post in hole.jpg

All the concrete places are closed on sunday so monday morning I will grab a tow behind redi-mix cart to fill the hole in. Fuck mixing 114 bags of concrete. Tomorrow I will spend some time figuring out the electrical and bracing the pole for concrete pouring.

That mini mini mini excavator made me laugh. I think I'd get pissed trying to use that and just grab a shovel.

Bell mouth the hole so frost has less chance to push it up.

I wish you could see what a hole like that looks like here. It'd be an all day ordeal getting that deep.

Probably, but I'd still do it over spending $200 for a teaspoon excavator rental.

Pole hole auger in my Bobcat is what I've used for gate posts, but that's because i have that handy.

Im old and fat so it was well worth it. The money saved on not paying someone to dig the hole can be used on tools for the garage.

My old property would require a larger mini excavator to make it thru the soil with the amount of rocks. Probably could have mixed into a concrete with how pure the sand was.

I don't think frost will be a problem.

The frost depth for ABQ NM is 16inches but I think that might be a lie. I see 2-3 inches at most in town.

Makes sense. I've never lived in a warm place. We normally go 10 feet down.

Solid rock and red clay here under top soil.

FIFY...

Gate looks nice, but I question whether it'll stop a drunk driver?

Probably not a speeding one but will make it eaiser to see its not a thru street. If someone hits the gate then upgrades will be warranted. Not sure the mechansim could take a hit. I would need to modify the system to lock the second side in.
It would be great if that power came from your neighbors. Then I would install a Binford 9000 gate opener.
I wish. See pictures below for the shit storm.

How is it 2.5 houses on the road? I'm a :homer:

Turns out the pipe is broken in the driveway but not even sure where the wire runs to. Maybe it pops out somewhere else so I picked up a wire tracer from home depot. If that doesnt work then I will run a new pipe under the driveway. Borescope from Milwaukee works pretty well but could be longer.

Now to something that will either be a awesome help or just a massive fail. Made from scrap 2x4's to help with transferring the concrete from the tow behind concrete mixer.

That ramp works great if it's wide enough, I did that for pouring directly out of my hf mixer into beam forms. Worked really awesome and saved a lot of needless wheel barrowing.

I got lucky that I didnt need to use it. Hole was big enough to pour without hitting the pole.

So welding scrap onto the pole turned into a shit show since I forgot to do it before installing pole. This morning I picked up a 50ft welder extension cord to reach the gate pole area before I picked up the concrete. I thought it would only be a 15 min job to weld the 1/2 scrap pieces onto the pole but I was mistaken. Turns out I used a different plug on the my welder and the wall plug so I spent 20 minutes putting a different plug on the welder and extension cable. So I cut up a new $180 dollar extension cable. :mad3: .
welded scrap.jpg

Pour directly into the hole. Second pour was a little further away from the pole but I didnt need the ramp.
Easy pour.jpg

Wood shield to give me some space when I run a new pipe for electrical over to the area. AKA the ramp was reused for something else.
Wiring protection.jpg

Still need some finishing touches on the concrete and surrounding area. This sucker will not be moving with +8,000 lbs of concrete. I taped the magnetic levels onto the pole to avoid accidentally knocking them into the concrete.
Almost finished.jpg

2500HD Duramax. I was only allowed to tow 1.5 yards at a time. I split the 2 cu yards into 2 loads of 1 cu yard but I wonder if I got more than 2 yards based on how full the hole was. I only wasted 5 - 5 gallon buckets to empty the Redi-mix truck the second time. I did place metal tubes into the bucket to maybe use as weights later on.

It just hit me how BIG that hole was lol.
If nothing else you can cut the tube off and edge bolt a 12x12 base plate on that foundation.

I was thinking the same or sleeve the post if someone does take it out. Shame I wouldnt be around in 75 years when they try to bulldoze the property. Might be a surprise for someone that thinks it much smaller concrete hole.
