Dog stomach obstruction

One of my buddy's labs has been cut open 3 times I think? Pet insurance covered it. Dog makes him a lot of money guiding waterfowl though, worth it.

My old pup Trigger had an obstruction, vet didn't figure it out until it was too late. He was a good dog.

We didn't have the cash for a similar deal that involved pancreatitis(?) too and the vet worked with a company called care credit. Was reasonable at the time for short term stuff, I think 12 months. I'm sure there's something similar still. 3 years is young, I say save it. Plus they will know you helped em, dogs are good like that

Sucks though and good luck

Back a few years ago we had Simon and Zoey. Zoey died of natural causes. Simon developed some kind of medical condition. We were broke as fuck at the time. We made the painful decision to put him down because we just couldn’t afford to treat him. I will never forget how I felt after he was put down.

About year later we got Elliot, and we signed up for Care Credit. We have spent around $3500 to fix his knees. The first one went on the Care Credit card. Things changed financially for us, so the second knee was easier to absorb the cost.

I have never had to deal with an obstruction, but I think I would do whatever it takes to help the pup.

If there are any veterinary schools in your area check with them. Some will do surgery for substantially less $$ in order to give their students experience (under the supervision of a full fledged Vet) .
Also check with the animal adoption places, Friends of Pets, Humane Society, etc. They probably have a line on vets who are in it to help animals.

I had a Red Heeler that suddenly started puking his food up all the time. I waited a couple of days and there was no improvement. I took him to the vet and they did an ultrasound and saw an obstruction in his intestine but could not tell what it was. They said it may pass but recommended surgery. I took him home, then he couldn't even keep water down. I had the surgery done and they extracted a whole ass squeaker from that little shit's intestine.
I spent $400 on the the first vet visit for the exam and ultrasound. The surgery was $1200. This was 2019 timeframe.

My dog made a full recovery after the operation.

FWIW call around vets and find a better price, especially rural vets, they do good work at much cheaper prices. I would get the surgery all over again.

What…. No one had a tampon eater????

Had a Shepard that ate 3-4 tampons… the strings got tangled inside his stomach so they couldn’t pass!!!! $3,000.00!!!!! Vet gave me the baggy of what they pulled out so I could show my wife and 3 daughters!!!!!
:mad3::mad3::mad3:
Get the surgery OP….. take suggestions here about calling around…

If you end up short…. Well pick up the slack!!!

So my 3yo catahoula/lab has an obstruction in her stomach/small intestine. Can’t tell from the xray what it is. Have no idea what could be. Surgery is $$$ and I just can’t justify it. They’re going to give her fluids and send her home with us.

Looking for y’alls experiences and odds of survival/passing it naturally.
We had one eat something and couldnt pass it. Spent about 4k and he died anyway. The vet told us dogs that eat stuff like tend to be repeat customers. It sucked bad as he was a great dog.

Well we had a referral from the hospital for another place that could do the surgery today, but she didn't make it through the night. We had to put her down. The ER doc said surgery likely would not have been successful in this case.

In my almost 50 years I've never wanted my dad as much as I do now. I just wanted to be a kid again because dad would know how to fix it. Now I'm the dad and I couldn't fix it 😭

Thanks for the offers of support. I wouldn't have accepted it, but it is appreciated.

Sorry man, this is tough.

I went through this 4 years ago after my dog ate a tampon. The surgery was extremely hard. The vet did the first one but a day after she was sent home, she went septic from the stitches coming undone. They had to re-do the surgery and keep her in an emergency facility for several days after. I was almost a couple thousand in at the end of the first surgery and I used that to justify spending more. All in all I spent $7k. I still cringe at that.

Ahh...man. I am so sorry to see this. What a strikingly beautiful girl! Best thoughts to you and your family right now.

RIP Hooza.

My mom had a lab that ate rocks all the time. He ended up getting surgery to remove some of them at one point. I remember it was $800 and I thought my mom was crazy for paying that much to keep a dog alive. This would have been in 1992 or 93.

I'm really sorry to hear that Hooza has passed. That's one of the very hardest things about having a great dog.

I am positive that Hooza is running and playing pain free with my Labs and the other dogs from here.

She'll be waiting to see you again.
