So my 3yo catahoula/lab has an obstruction in her stomach/small intestine. Can’t tell from the xray what it is. Have no idea what could be. Surgery is $$$ and I just can’t justify it. They’re going to give her fluids and send her home with us.

Looking for y’alls experiences and odds of survival/passing it naturally.

Is this a regular vet office or a veterinary hospital? Veterinary hospital will generally run you 2-3x the cost.

Could be a sock or a kitchen sponge. Dogs eat all sorts of dumb shit. You could shop around for the surgery vet prices vary a lot. Surrendering the dog to an adoption place in exchange for them paying for surgery is sometimes an option too.

Buddies lab eats socks and dishrags all the time. A cap of hydrogen peroxide normally will dislodge it.

Wish yall the best.
We did that once when she was a pup. Ate a effing Covid mask, but we knew what it was and when it happened. Doc recommended us not doing that now.

If its soley a cost issue I'll bet we can raise the funds for you. Dogs are way better than people  I'll gladly toss something your way.

My folks dog ate a squeaker and that turned out to be a very very expensice squeaker

If you take her home tonight then call every vet place first thing in the AM, emergency vets are pricey for a reason.

Had a pure bred Catahoula that loved to eat socks and stuff. We had to have surgery performed once to remove the obstruction. This was probably 29 years ago and I think it was $2Kish. The problem with socks and stuff like that is it is unlikely to pass as they can't really chew it up and tend to swallow them almost whole, so it is too large to pass and stomach acids do nothing to break it down. The other problem is you have a limited amount of time before something needs to be done when their digestive tract is clogged up.

I would agree that the emergency vet is significantly more expensive than a normal vet, so maybe check with your vet to see if they have capability to operate.

Appreciate it. We are going to call around tomorrow. I'm completely sick about it, but I just can't see spending that much for a not guaranteed outcome.

Went through this over 20yrs ago, female Cane Corso. It wound up being half of a wash cloth. Was stuck partially in stomach, half way into intestine. Had to have surgery and also remove a section of intestine. IIRC it was around $1500? Which is like 4 grand in '24 dollars.

So my doggo did this and we saved her. Lots of $$$. Other dog did same and we waited overnight to make up our minds. Poor guy died a horrible agonizing death and with a mouth full of bile at the foot of our bed. I have put that out of my mind until now. Damn.

Uggh :frown::frown::frown::frown:

Took my healthy 8-year-old lab mix to the same vet we’ve used for 25 years. Shots were $530. Uses to be like $135. You’re going to pay at least double at the emergency vet. Shop again tomorrow. No offense, but if the price is out of your range post up here immediately and I’ll bet we can take care of that in like 24 hours.

People here may kick in for your dog and not frop a penny on a political donation. . And that shows the character of most of us. Virtually all of us value your pet more than a lawyer turned politician. . Good luck.

Put the dog down. My buddy spent $10K on his wife’s dog despite my advice not to. The dog ended up dying two weeks later. Needless to say he was posses.

Just went through this a month ago with our 16 month old Bernese. He was a known sock eater and had been to the vet before for it but always passed them. Wife and daughter couldn't keep their socks picked up. He threw up Sunday evening and didn't eat but Monday was back to normal. Tuesday evening he went down fast, got him into the vet Wednesday mid day. He had a blockage in his small intestine and the vet said it had been there a while. Was going to cost $7k+ and the vet said it would not be a routine surgery and he would require after surgery care for more $$$. Wife made the decision to put him down that evening. Miss that big goof ball. Good luck with your decision.

We had to do that a few times with our blue heeler. She would eat damn near anything in the yard :-\ We would use a plastic syringe in her mouth.

You have to be careful about doing this though, I would only do it when you don't have other options. the peroxide can wreck their esophagus.
