City tap water, good quality and tastes like filtered/bottled water, never left hard water deposits or anything. Turned the kitchen sink on a minute ago and it sputtered for a few seconds before a bunch of chalky white water came out, didn't smell any different than normal. Ran the water a few minutes and now it's back to normal. Didn't notice anything this morning when I showered or drank a glass of water before leaving. Been in this apartment 7 years and it's never done that shit.

Any ideas?

Did you notice bubbles in the water?
Water was sputtering as it came out but in the glass it didn't seem like it had bubbles or anything, just a chalky white color but otherwise normal.

Sounds like exactly what my faucets do every time I shut off/drain the house water to work on something. Including the weird color and crud.

Apartment, you say? Neighbors fix a leak?
Entirely possible. It's a 2 over 2 building and 2 of the units are empty. I know the one over mine has had plumbing issues in the past including a leak into the ceiling of my bathroom about 6 months ago.

edit: There's also a new house being built directly behind my building right now.

Run all the taps until they're clear and send it.
Way ahead of you.

Sometimes when water gets aerated it turns white, but it will clear up in a few seconds if that's the case.
First thought was it seemed like there was air in the line but the water I put in a cup didn't settle or turn clear either.

I'll bet the city was working on the lines
Probably. Next street over is a water main that likes to break about once a year.

Some scaling was probably knocked loose by the air or work preformed to the system somewhere. Your sink doesn't have the little aerated on the end of it?

No screen, it's one of those newer faucets where the whole head pulls out for a spray wand. Has some kind of quick disconnect collar on it it looks like, but fuck if I know how it comes off. Could probably just pull it out and put it in a glass filled white white vinegar for a bit I guess.

Unless already removed there is a screen somewhere. They all have them, may be on the connection end.

Probably. Should have been more clear, meant there's not a screen on the end that screws off like a traditional kitchen faucet.

Yup - I got ya. A personal side hobby of mine, in my travels, is to remove the flow restrictors, so I have had a few apart :flipoff2: ha ha - always a screen somewhere!

I feel you, I just went through my dad's whole new house and did that when I visited him earlier this month. He hadn't bothered to do it anywhere but the shower in the master bath.

Yes, now you got the AIDS…

Well I might have a bigger problem.

Went to hop in the shower, turn the water on and get nothing. Faucet thing on the wall jumps a couple times, couple spurts come out then nothing. Now I can hear water running whether the handle is turned on or not. Currently on hold with the maintenance emergency line.

edit: On call maintenance people are supposedly on the way. Of course I can't go shut the water off because the shut off, hot water heater, etc are all outside behind the building in a locked maintenance shed which is behind a fence with no gate and they have all the gates between the buildings locked.

you rent or own?

On call maintenance people never called or showed and this shit has been just running wide open throttle inside the wall or under the floor all night. Sounds like it might possibly be just running into the drain line, not really sure. I popped all the shower handle shit off the wall last night to see if I could see anything but nothing from what I could see. Thankfully no water in my actual apartment yet. Kinda hoping it's in the wall enough they have to tear the tub/shower out to fix it so I can get out of this lease. Was planning on moving when it was up anyway.

Rent

The saga continues.

Took over an hour of repeatedly calling the realty office this morning to get someone on the phone. Get some mumbly Mexican who I can barely understand. All I can understand from this guy is work order #, which he keeps repeating. End up getting put on hold for a half hour before he finally puts me on with the property manager who tells me they created a ticket and someone will contact me in a few days. Hey retard, you've got a pipe flooding either the wall or crawlspace of this building, you might wanna get someone out here now to shut the fucking water off, it's already been over 12 hours. "oh, we'll see what we can do and we'll call you back, but you need to go turn the water off". Motherfucker I would have turned it off last night but y'all have the connection inside an inaccessible shed. "Oh, well we'll call you back."

Well while I was on hold I was looking out my kitchen window and noticed the curb outside my apartment was wet. Went out there and the entire side of the building between it and the street is flooded, the entire back area behind the fence is flooded, and the storm drain on the corner is completely filled. There's probably 3-4" of standing water out there.

Well they call back while I'm out there and say they're sending someone, that was 2 hours ago, meanwhile this shit is still just flowing. 5-6 GPM at least x 16 hours, probably more than 5000 gallons at this point.

Plumber isn't going to be able to do shit either when he gets here because he won't be able to access the utility shed and water line either. Only upside to all this is the city will probably never know there's a leak and not bill me for all this because they've estimated use on every single bill for 7 years because they can't access the meters either.

Guessing the hot water heater out there busted because now I have zero flow if I turn the hot water on at the sinks, cold still works fine but nothing at the shower.

Someone's "good enough" pipe strapping job was letting the pipe move and that final water hammer from farting the air out is what made the solder joint finally fuck off.
