after I set the pinion preload in a Dana 60 and remove the yoke it loosens up

is that normal?

I get the shim stack on and torque the pinion it spins at 20" lbs
when I remove the Yoke it gets loose

Sure is. The outer pinion bearing isn't much more than a slip-fit.

You mean when theres nothing holding the bearing in position and with proper tension it doesnt hold position?
that's correct, I remove the yoke to install the seal and it is a little loose, BTW the gears are not installed

The yoke holds everything in place. The pinion may hold itself there only if you're lucky and the outer bearing has a very tight tolerance. Usually any little touch and it'll fall out.

You should have waited till Tuesday for a post such as this BTW... that's the best time for quick replies...
