I was just reminded of this. Mastodon killed this for a metal band. Stairway to Heaven

Hmmm. Talented musicians, good producers. The way this is done, they look at the back catalog of hits, then look at what they have available, in this case no doubt the register of the lead singer. Sort for that column on the spreadsheet, BOOM, Stairway to Heaven comes up.

They sing and perform it, they are professional musicians so it sounds great.

However, there is absolutely nothing in this rendition which indicates that anything more than Max Wienberg and the Max Wienberg 7 are playing this song, with a vocalist from American Idol. This song lacks everything musical about it. There are great renditions of StH (full disclosure I am of course a huge zeppelin fan), but this isn't one of them.

This is a competent rendition by a group of professional musicians. That's pretty much not the magic that Stairway to Heaven has to offer.

Please just shut the fuck up! For the love of God shut the fuck up.
A little more context on Mastadon covering this song.

Professional musicians making a song sound good? You don't say. Isn't that literally what they do for a living?

Yes, and it's an easy skill to have, which is why there are still bands going begging for work even though they are great musicians. My tiny burg can sometimes conjure up 3 different groups of excellent musicians to play simultaneously. That's half the population of the downtown area.

But none of that makes a song that was worthy of being recorded, published to YT, and listened to.

This thread was about remarkable cover songs. That was not. Now don't play coy and pretend you were being innocent, that makes you a girl.

Uh dude that's part of the marketing, ok? They sit around a fold-out table and brainstorm stories, then one of the band tells the story to Teen Beat magazine, then you read it.

Covers have to be exceptional if they are from an already-famous act, and that is not an exceptional cover. It was a marketing strategy, to go with the song they chose.

Easter Bunny: not real dude.

Read the article. Especially the last 2 questions.

Mastodon is a metal band. To put that song out in the arrangement they did, shows just how talented they are.

Also the dude singing is the drummer, who didn't sing on any of their first few albums. He's a ridiculous drummer.

Not going to edit the quote, but the kids doing Tool 46 and 2 is the most awesome one they've done. I want to high five the drummer and give him his first beer.
