No one posted this? This cover is amazing if you love Thin Lizzy.
I forgot about this great cover
I was just reminded of this. Mastodon killed this for a metal band. Stairway to Heaven
Hmmm. Talented musicians, good producers. The way this is done, they look at the back catalog of hits, then look at what they have available, in this case no doubt the register of the lead singer. Sort for that column on the spreadsheet, BOOM, Stairway to Heaven comes up.
They sing and perform it, they are professional musicians so it sounds great.
However, there is absolutely nothing in this rendition which indicates that anything more than Max Wienberg and the Max Wienberg 7 are playing this song, with a vocalist from American Idol. This song lacks everything musical about it. There are great renditions of StH (full disclosure I am of course a huge zeppelin fan), but this isn't one of them.
This is a competent rendition by a group of professional musicians. That's pretty much not the magic that Stairway to Heaven has to offer.

Professional musicians making a song sound good? You don't say. Isn't that literally what they do for a living?
Please just shut the fuck up! For the love of God shut the fuck up.
A little more context on Mastadon covering this song.

Uh dude that's part of the marketing, ok? They sit around a fold-out table and brainstorm stories, then one of the band tells the story to Teen Beat magazine, then you read it.
Covers have to be exceptional if they are from an already-famous act, and that is not an exceptional cover. It was a marketing strategy, to go with the song they chose.
Easter Bunny: not real dude.
Not going to edit the quote, but the kids doing Tool 46 and 2 is the most awesome one they've done. I want to high five the drummer and give him his first beer.
Fawesome. I recognized the song from the first bars. Interesting choice.
