have a large project starting at work and need to pickup a construction hard hat. So I've been meaning to get a bump/spotter/SAR style helmet for awhile as well. Do any of those style meet what's typically called for in a hard hat? Obviously don't work on construction sites very often.

As long as it's ANSI Z89.1 certified you're probably fine unless whoever is running the site has some obscure policy.

get one of these so everyone knows youre a pro

no , need to have a brim.
not that i know of.
we use the standard issued hard hat on all of our construction sites.
our safety guy will have you removed the job site .
if you do not have the correct certificate lid.

There is an ANSI standard that it'll need to meet and different classes depending on the electrical hazards present. The type you're describing is probably a type II, common in Europe but not so much here so I'm not too familiar with them. You're employer or the general on the project probably has their own requirements for the job too.

Hey, all the yearly safety training I have to do just paid off!

Just pick one up off the side of the freeway. You can probably get a ladder, igloo water cooler, and a bed liner insert all on the same trip.

Hmm looks like MSA has a new Helmet that's what I'm looking for. Meets the Ansi Z89.1. Thanks that gives me any idea of that to look for anyways.

Rule of thumb, always avoid anyone in a brand new hardhat. They're either a total green bean, or OSHA....

No doubt, won't argue that point. I'll drop it in the dirt and rub it around for a bit... :flipoff2:

I'm just observing. Secondary or tertiary set of eyes to make sure the plans are followed. And not get in the way or hit with anything.

no one is inspecting your hard hat, especially if you are clipboard guy

So if a helmet is rated for ANSI Z89.1 Type 2 does that meet or exceed a Type 1?

Exceeds sort of. Type 2 is for electrical work.

Depends entirely on the site. The style of helmets he's looking at are going to stand out vs typical hard hats. Government site they may. There's no shortage of overzealous, by the book safety guys out there either. Hell of an assumption given the OP has given zero indication of what kind of job site he's going to be on.

I have been in/around construction for close to 30 years now and keep a box of brand new hardhats in my truck I lose them so often.

Currently have one $35 million and one $17 million dollar project going on and will soon have another valued at $82 million starting.

Not OSHA or green:flipoff2:

Yeah, I should have included “boss” to that list.

Sorry Federal job site, Federal Facility Manager, as a PHS officer we sorta stand out regardless so not worried about that.

OSHA won't be up here unless someone f-ups badly. Or maybe given it's my first project of this size what do I know. Typically they haven't been present on our other smaller scale stuff.

our company has a safety guys on every job we have going. they are in everyone's business.
owner says it save the company a shit ton of money on insurance.
does lunch box talks weekly.
checking tools for wear...
safety glasses hard toe shoes, ear plugs.....

5 or 6 years ago I picked up a job for a company like that. I go to lunch and come back and find the safety dickhead had cut the plugs off everyone's extension cords that didn't have grounds anymore. Took a lot of restraint not to beat that fucker with my ones he cut. His company got a bill for the new 100 footers I had to go buy. Never worked for them again.

I don't mind a company emphasizing safety. You really want me to keep my hard hat on after OSHA says I don't need to? Fine. You want to inspect my tools and shit? Fine. But I'll be damned if I'll do work for you if you're going to have some limp dick standing over top of me the entire time I'm on site.

Had another super on a different site tell me I had to wear my hard hat in my truck when I was eating lunch if I was on the site. I'm not on your site, I'm in my truck. If you want me to move it off site I'm taking my trailer and not coming back.

When I was in the field, we had some hardcore safety guys. We’d catch these fuckers peeking in our personal ice chests. I’m living between work truck and hotel all week. Damn right there’s some blue mountains in MY cooler. Stick to checking the Igloo to make sure there’s sufficient drinking water on site...

Anything that resembles a normal hard hat will be fine. Go to whatever tool supply house is near you and buy whatever is comfortable.

Some safety guys are a joke. The project I'm on now, the guy look like mall cop, but has this big stupid soft add on brim and mullet thing to shade his face and neck. It reminds of the hat from the beginning of sand lot.

Motherfucker, you sit in your truck all day, you really need all that shit for the 5 mins it takes you to walk over and tell someone that their safety glasses are to low on their nose

The problem with these clueless safety guys are they put so much emphasis on all the little bullshit rules that people just say fuck it and don't think to take the ones that actually matter seriously.

Some of the companies I've worked for, you literally spent hours every day doing safety shit. Morning meeting, stretches, get to site and the whole crew was supposed to walk the job and then fill out a JSA together.

Last year I made probably $20-30k just filling out JSA's :flipoff2::laughing:

Ive been happy with my Klein full brim. If going another route- Id look at a full brim carbon fiber, but honestly... beef up your baby neck if thats a deal breaker. The klein has great support
