I bought one of these while drunk or something.

Do they work worth a fuck?

That is a UHF transit antenna. It will not work well for VHF.

A VHF transit antenna will have about 1/3 the range of a properly tuned 5/8 wave whip. They are not especially sturdy, tree branches will make short work of them.

Amazon.
Got tired of forgetting to take down my antenna every time I load the Jeep into the trailer. Problem is I haven't tested it more than 300-400 ft.

Doc and Dale had them on our Montrose trip. Seemed to work OK.

Also, transit antennas are not NGP. mounting them like pictured there really cuts down on there effective range.

I literally took that picture ahead of time because I knew somebody would say that.

How bad is it relative to the correctly tuned (cut to length...) regular chintzy whip antenna?
Liked stated above, about 1/3 the range if they are both properly mounted. They are the main reason police spec radios were 100w when they only needed 30 mile range on average. Even with repeaters.

I have one on my buggy cause it clears the shop door while loaded still. It's worked fine so far for me out wheeling and is mounted on my roof but angles back a bit which might be helping it live here as it hits tree branches on the regular. I have the Rugged stealth one and GMR45.

I didn't buy it for long range communication. I bought it for decent communication while trail riding with a group. If I need long range, I'll throw the big antenna back on.

Have one of these, it gets out pretty well on VHF and UHF los.

The only drawback is it uses two connectors, one for each frequency and the radio only uses one antenna connection.

Sticking up just behind the rear window, forward of the 1 inch pipe coming out of the stainless tank.
