So I built a small BBQ pit for camping and whatnot out of a tank from a semi trailer.

Here's the tank.

Cut off the unnecessary bracketry then cut it in half.

Cut up some 1/8th inch plate and started making this thing an oval. More distance from the fire to the grill surface.

Just found out that I'm limited to 5 pics per post.

Then was the all so fun grinding part. Got to be smooth.

Once that was done it was time to decide what the lid would look like and then cut it out.

I think it's coming along nicely.

To seal the lid better I welded 3/4 flat strap around the inside of the lid opening. I didn't want it on the outside cuz that's just ugly.

Sometimes I get wrapped up in what I'm doing and forget to take pics along the way.

Added two bolts for a handle then threw on some legs made from tube, and washers for feet.

Made the grill from some grating I had laying around, Used a piece of angle iron across the back and front to support the grill.
Also made a clean out door for getting ashes out. Needs some sort of latch to keep it closed.

It's hard to see in this pic but I made a small grill at the bottom to keep the charcoal off the bottom.

A couple of latches to keep it closed while traveling, a bit of paint and a wooden handle to complete the Pit.

Nice work, question
why not shape the handle to match the tank profile???

What do you mean? Wrap it around the sides?
Woodworking is way more difficult than metal, That's why I do metal.:grinpimp:

Round over the top\bottom corners so it fits the hand and looks similar to the end view of the tank...

Set table saw blade at 45* trim off corners, round over with a rasp or sander.

It will make it easier to roll over in the hand as ya open the lid.

I love the details put into the metal thus the handle wants some love.

That's a good idea. I don't have a table saw but I can belt sand the stuffing out of it.

That came out nice was that tank used for air looked relatively clean on the inside
