You can doo Belize pretty cheap or very expensive ... my 2 cents on San Pedro/ Amergres Cay.
Hotels are $60-$800 a night ... Average decent is probably $125 . We got a condo with AC, pool, 24 hour security for ~$200 a night.
Food - local food you can eat for $10-$12 a day, tourist food $60+ a day. I was good with local food, my wife not so much. Local lunch is chicken and rice every place, but you can get tacos for breakfast and dinner but not for lunch unless you go to a tourist place. Lots of local taco places that were decent. Just look for the hole in the wall places with locals eating at it.
Diving - local reef dives 2 tanks $100, the reef gets fished pretty hard so don't expect a ton of marine life. There is a tiny marine reserve with lots of fish but it's super crowded and not worth diving. The water is warm, you will see some fish and sharks, so the diving isn't bad but not Hawaii good. A lot of the rental gear is well used at the two places I dove with, I was glad I had my own. The reef is a 1/2 mile out so you won't be doing any snorkel trips from shore.
Not much in the way of public beaches, so get a hotel with one if you want to lounge on the beach. You can day drink in the water on the beach at Secret Beach, but plan on $30 a person for food and drink for an afternoon minimum. did a mention the lack of public beaches.
Must do .. Take the catamaran sail trip to Caye Caulker, ~$125 PP. We made a couple of snorkel stops, plus lunch, plus open bar .... great trip
Doing a day trip to the Mayan ruins is a pain from the islands and expensive ( like $300-$500 PP ) , and staying in Belize City is not recommended ( lots of crime). So we passed.
San Pedro outside the beach row is like any 3rd world central american country. Driving around in a golf cart is fun for about 30 minutes, they ride like shit and are slow. The dump trucks start rolling at 3 am , before traffic starts so don't stay on the main drag because they don't do mufflers. And don't flush the TP, like Mexico the shit tickets go in the waste basket
And don't drink the water
