So I booked a trip to Belize , Ambergris Caye this winter with the wife unit. This is our first time to Belize and have. condo in San Pedro reserved, planning on Diving and beach bumming. Anything. I shouldn't. miss or shit I should stay away from .

Best diving, places to avoid , places to check out  . I'm thinking of doing the cave tubing Myan ruins tour.

I am going in March, so far I have booked some scuba in Ambergris Caye.
People told me to avoid the big blue hole as it's stupid.

We stayed at Caves Branch lodge around 20 years ago. The caves were cool to hike through. The tubing was fun, you hiked up to the dead end then floated down in the complete darkness. Blind catfish would come up and nibble on your toes:laughing: We also rappelled into one of the sink holes which was fun. We left there and stayed at Tobacco Caye for the remainder and just beach bummed it. Back then they didnt get a lot of services to the islands so you ate whatever was caught that day. Parents let us kids go out on the fishing boat with the resort guy and catch lunch and dinner for everyone, was a pretty cool experience being in that little skiff in the ocean catching Tuna and my parents not having a care in the world:lmao:

It looks like lots of scuba places so I'll probably play it by ear instead of being smart and booking in advance :homer:. I might try and schedule in my PADI advanced certs, it's 3 days, 5 dives, and $500 :shaking:. I've heard the blue hole is both expensive and a lame dive, but it's "the blue hole".

Blue Hole in NM is fun for a hot summer day.

Can’t help since I can’t remember the dives we did there a few years back. But I’ve come to regard the certs as mostly a cash grab unless you’re trying to become a dive master or something. The only extra ones I have are Navigation and Nitrox, so not like I really know. But it feels like a “pay our price so then you can convince yourself that dive ops don’t see you as a noob” thing.

Dude don't do it!!!!

Covid is still bad down there and they are stacking the bodies up to the ceilings in the hospitals.

If you go triple mask, even on the beach by yourself and make sure you have all your booster shots, id get 2-3 of them just to be safe

Hazmat suit might not be a bad idea.

Lots of dives are now requiring advanced certs and 25+ documented dives for the more fun trips. I wanted to get my Nitrox and deep water so I'll probably just do the whole advanced. I could do it here in MT, but screw diving in 40 degree water with nothing to. look at but trout :clown:.

Don't you have a fat lesbian girlfriend to check on rather the fuck my threads, just make another and call me out. Really I have plenty of time to arguie with an idiot with a 60 IQ on the internet. Shut up or make another thread, preferably in the TP. Because I know shit I won't broadcast here on the open forum.

Wife and I did our honeymoon in 2017 on Ambergris Caye. Family friends of hers own a Condo in the Royal Palm Villas (that they let us stay in for free) on the South end (about a 10-15 minute walk from San Pedro) and live there most of the year, here (Fort Collins) the other portion. We were there about a week and a half.

We ate at either Robin's Kitchen or a place right across the street from the condo about 70% of the time.

A tip...go to the store, buy a bunch of beer, and ride back with the delivery person.

Some things we enjoyed:
  • Snorkeling (went several times) - got to hang with/hold stingrays, nurse sharks, see all kinds of sea life, etc.
  • Walking up and down the beach and getting drinks at various bars (beach is publicly owned, can't be closed off)
  • Drop by Caye Caulker (the party Caye) and hangout
  • Walk around San Pedro

Some other general notes:
  • American food at the convenience stores is expensive and likely well out of date (I had soda that tastes like pure carbonated water)
  • The island is overall pretty safe. The cartel like their island relatively clean, and don't like locals messing with the tourists/gringos at all. They actually donate to the local schools and such. The nicer and safer the island, the more cash flow they get from tourists, and they don't like their cash flow messed with. Locals that have crossed those lines, 10/10 times disappear. All this was told to us by several locals.
  • It's not "beachy" like Mexico, but more rocky. The water can be pretty shallow in areas for a looooong ways out. We would go out a long ways and I could still barely be clearing reef just flat floating while snorkeling.

If we were to go again, we'd likely spend some more time out in the other Caye's, and visit the mainland and do some things. It's likely grown since we went, but not a "massive" amount to do.

Small world story - the taxi driver that took us back to the airport had worked in Fort Collins for a number of years driving the bush to and from the Mishawaka (small concert venue up the canyon) and daughter lives in Denver

Go dive! It’s excellent

I have been there three times but I am not a diver so no help there. First time we stayed a the Howler Monkey Inn or something. Really cool. Drove all over up and down the country. It is located just north of the Airport not too far.

Second time was on Caye Caulker. But it was years ago. Nice time just walked around and chatted. Rented a Kayak etc. It was $250 for a week for our own hut. A few local characters and definitely somewhat of a party culture for sure. Positive. Locals said that Ambergris is way nicer, but I was happy on the rustic island.

Third time was at Hopkins down south. Drove all over. Had a great time. This was a year ago.

Just my opinion here but a few things I observed:

1. There was a lot of racial diversity and most everyone seemed to stay in their lane. Didn't sense much for animosity amongst the locals. Didn't see alot of intermixing of the groups. Different groups live in different parts. Some friendlier than others.

2. Universally everyone says stay away from Belize City. I have been there once or twice but didn't stay there. Just usual city stuff.

3. I generally felt safe. Only one time, when we went to an out of the way "you aren't from around here are you......" store, did I feel unsafe. We didn't 't get out of the car at that locale.

4. US dollars are happily accepted and people were kind. I found what I was looking for. Just followed the usual rules like don't run around after dark flashing cash LOL that applies all over the world. Driving at night can be sketchy so be careful.

5. I enjoy it enough that I really would consider moving there later. Love it. Only ran into one person that I really needed to communicate with who couldn't speak English. That was only one time.

I am jealous of your trip. Have fun and be safe!

Haven’t been. The wife and I have been on a Caribbean exploration for a few years. I mentioned Belize for our next go. Some good info here.

My wife did her advanced in Jamaica last year. Far better experience than the shitty lakes I did mine in. You should be able to do the book portion before you arrive. I’d highly recommend that as studying takes up valuable drinking time.

I worked on a celltower on Caye Caulker. Complete lack of safety and party atmosphere was a trip.
Safety for your work or in general?
Not sure if I'm picturing you climbing a tower with no fall arrest or people shooting off guns in the streets without arrest.

I mistyped and forgot to say "in the streets". fixed now.
Picture downtown, walking around hammered and firing off in every direction. allah ackbar.

From what I know, their gun laws suck. Stupid ass virus software faggot druggie paid for a security team and they had bolt actions and pump shotguns.

My son has been a couple times , but it was inland , not on the coast .

Think it was Cayo ?

In the future, don’t count out Placencia. It’s been maybe 10 or 11 years since I’ve been there, so I have no idea how much it’s changed. But we absolutely loved its extremely low-key vibe.

Maybe you are half right?
Maybe not to the extent of locked up, but yeah I remember his position on the vax and masks scolded us.

So Belize. Are they wearing masks and vaxxing?
