What's new

Audi A/S8 or Lexus LS 460/FSport

Here you go...

I love the cts-v for what it is, but I’m not sure I’d want to pile miles on one 11 interstate hours each way at a time. That’s a lot of time with the cruise set to observe plastic fantastic gm parts bin mediocrity without massaging seats or adaptive cruise, and suspension is not exactly plush.

The LS will chew through tires.
Why? Is it a generational thing?
3rd choice I would say pick up a used Toyota Avalon, likely will run forever with just a general maintenance...
My youngests mother has an Avalon, I'm not really a fan of it.
Lexus or an Avalon like like gtrplyr said. We have a Camry XSE v6 which is a nice road trip machine, so don't discount that either.
We just bought my Bonus Kid a 17 XSE, its actually what started all this. Its a real nice car but it rides a little rough and the width of the drivers leg area is a little narrow for me.
You really need a full size car to do that trip? Either way, no go on anything german for that, go Lexus for sure. You could probably get away with an ES or even an IS for a lot less, or find an NX or RX if you want more space at a lower price than an LS. Heck, even a Camry or Avalon would do the trip just fine for a lot less too.
I dont need a car to do it at all, I have a Tundra Crew Max, just trying to do it as comfortably as possible.
Memphis to anywhere east means i40.

I40 means potholes and cops.

Potholes and cops means pickup- preferably a prerunner - not sports car.
Zero miles traveled on 40 from Memphis to Port Royal SC
When it comes to Out of warranty luxury cars, there’s absolutely no question that you’d rather own the Lexus than an Audi.
Buuuuuttt Toyota/ Lexus tech/ infotainment was pretty terrible in the mid 2000’s- early 2010’s so that bears consideration- I have no experience with that particular vintage of the LS, but I’d certainly want to take a long test drive and try out the adaptive cruise, Bluetooth interface etc.

the 2014+ Avalon became just a stretch Camry and suspension is too stiff to be in the same leagues of comfort as the prior generations which served as v6 powered 30 mpg ls alternatives.
Solid info, thank you

They just do. Don't know why. The IS chews through tires because of the factory negative chamber that isn't adjustable. The LS chews through tires because no clue. But you can pretty much expect half tread life.

I was going through a set of tires in about 10k miles on my IS350 F Sport. It's why I sold it. That basically meant about $1500 a year in tires. Wasn't worth it to me.

we looked at them before buying the SS, the interior was way too uncomfortable.

yeah looking into it/ stretching my recollection, the 4th gen Lexus LS platform spanned from 06-17 with a mid-cycle facelift in 12, but the core platform was pretty antiquated by the model years you referenced in your OP. And it looks like a pretty steep hike to get into an the next generation ('18+), the price jumps from low-mid $20's for a '17 to low-mid $40's for '18

this trackpad joystick thing on the center console by the shiftert that controlled the center screen in the 13-17 LS was absolutely terrible in my mom's RX. fortunately there are actual buttons for core radio and climate functions.

Once again you should absolutely drive an S class before making your decision, as its certainly preferable to the Audi, and has worlds better tech than the lexus.

the deals are pretty compelling too for something that stickered at 100k+ when new:

look at the Q50 cars. just snagged a 2016 on the cheapish(10k) for the wife to drive this summer. rwd, 300 turbo hp fun. plenty comfy for 6'1'' 215# american. nice interior, quiet, rides decent and gets 30mpg.

Go buy the newest, one owner with maintenance records you can afford, mileage doesn't matter. There's nothing else to compare it to.

huh weird, the VQ motors used to be considered pretty reliable
maybe they've gotten to the age of breaking chains and shit?

I'd wondered how it would fit in a nb car. sure be a fun little car to drive around. the motor package seems small enough. but for that cost might as well ls swap it.

The VQ is a notorious oil guzzling whore and most people don't check them because infiniti people are like nissan people but mo bougie. Eventually it either oils down the cats and people write the car off or more often the rings/bore/bearings give out from oil starvation.

This. My father in law lives and works in the SF Bay Area and daily drives one. Very reliable and comfortable car. My wife and I drive it when we visit them a few times a year. I like it quite a bit.

Fuck Audi. You wanna drive or work on shit. Lexus all day.
As a current Audi owner (wife's 22 Q5), this answer is all you need.

We haven't had any real problems, however my wife gets angry every time she tries to connect her phone to the car.

Also, I had an A6 for a while ('06). When I traded it in in 2012 the dashboard looked like a Christmas tree with all of the electrical issues it had.

only ever buy german cars at scrap value
keep the tank half full and the title hidden in the car so you can call up a hauler and sell it where it quits

I learned this with my A6. Wife is too stubborn to listen and is currently learning. I'm just glad she didn't buy the MB she first wanted.
