Anyone know about fire extinguishers and mounts?

2) once you let one go, you empty it.

There^, specifically is 1 of the 2 things upon which I was calling bullshit.

That is situation-dependent.

Also, intact valve seals are capable of sealing after partial discharge.

Primary fire extinguishers, yeah - it needs service after each use.

Noobnuts struggling with conflagration - yeah, shoot your wad.

If you have a few spares . . . meh, use it like a peppermill

I'm not going to partial blow my load and then not expect a little more to dribble out after I let go...:flipoff2: if you want to take that risk, that's fine.

You blow it all and then get some full service work done after to be sure it's good to go next time.

Hey man, I'm just trying to give you the practical reality of something you had all figger'd out in theory

There's at least 10 other ways shit can go down compared w/ how WikiHow taught you it goes :flipoff2:

As a general rule of thumb, how long does the typical ABC fire extinguisher last just sitting there?

Was watching camarata the other day where he lost an excavator. Ran a long ways to get an extinguisher from another piece of equipment, but come to find out it didn't work. He said something about them having a 6 month shelf life.

I don't know, I'm pretty sure ours get recharged every two years? They were never low. I've set some off that I got out of some cotton pickers that I helped scrap, they were atleast 10 years old at the time.

I successfully discharged one marked 1948.

I doubt modern extinguishers are built to the same standards though. They have 80 additional years of figuring out the bare minimum standard they can build them to.

Until it loses pressure, but in high-vibration environments (like, say, the frame of an excavator), you need to tilt it around & whack that motherfucker with a rubber hammer at different angles to unclump the powder that's been perfectly compacted. Mounted to a stationary surface w/o shock or vibration, it'll be fine until needed unless the seals or can are compromised. Unlimited shelf life.

EDIT: in a regulated industrial setting, have 'em serviced annually and replaced at 20 years old.
Also documented monthly inspections if you wanna' keep OSHA's cawk outta' your browneye

Do I care if an air compressor valve leaks a little? Prolly not. Do I care if a natural gas line leaks even a little? Fuck yes. Do I care if a toilet runs a little? Maybe but whatev. Do I care if a fire extinguisher drains itself silently? Also fuck yes. It's one of those things I'm not going to risk it with, even if some random fucktard on the internet says it's ok. I check my extinguishers every year, give em' a good thwack or two with a mallet and change em' after 10 years or so regardless.

That's what the gauge is for :shaking:
Nah, man - haven't you heard of those gages sticking?
Says 100 but it's dead because it's old?
Jesus, man, we must be vigilant.

My buddy's cousin's neighbor's baby mama's friend Jenny's hairdresser's kid Tito almost died from an empty fire extinguisher. He went to light a fart & his spandex skinny jeans melted onto his ball hair and caught fire, he grabbed the 15 lb ABC from the wall of the library and . . . nothing  By the time he got his junk into the drinking fountain next to the librarian's desk, his whole 'taint had third-degree burns and the freakin' fire department showed up because of all the smoke that came off his merkin infused with molten, flaming polymer.

If that fire extinguisher had been serviced that morning, Tito would still have a 'taint.

i might just dribble a ball against my extinguishers and keep them pissed off, keep the pressure built up, right?
