What's new

Any places buy cores?

I miss those days. Starter went out, take it down to Jimmy Ray's and ride the motorcycle to work for a few days. Then come home one day and the answering machine is blinking-

"Uh hey this is Jimmy Don down at Jimmy Ray's [cigar cough] hey uh got chore starter ready"

$15 later I got a "new" starter.

You got a better than new starter.

The Jimmy I knew, if you where on his good side or a regular customer he built that thing to perfection. Jimmy also sold acdelco reman's (he was an acdelco parts dealer), I had to get one once, he told me I wouldn't be happy with it but since I didn't have a starter to begin with for this thing I had to get something, and no time to grab something at a junkyard. I asked him if he wanted to go through it first, nope. Didn't want to touch it until it had to come apart.
Jimmy was right, that thing sounded terrible. I think I brought it back to "jimmy" in a short couple years. He made that thing purr. That starter is still on an engine of mine 30 years later and sounding just as good as ever.
Jimmy retired and has passed away. I'm stuck knowing I've got shitty remans or new china starters in my future. One employee of Jimmy went elsewhere, he'll just sell new stuff cause he can't get decent parts anymore at a price people are willing to pay, he'll rebuilt if you insist on it, but anymore, your money ahead to just buy a couple new ones and swap out when needed.

kinda sucks when the parts store lifetime warranty ones are all assembled with the wrong parts
like diesel VW starters have a stronger solenoid on them that holds the pinion out a little harder, the parts store ones pop out of engagement at the first cough the engine makes

anyone who has suffered a non-solenoid starter of the age that only used the inertia of the bendix to sling it into engagement knows that pain
let the shit spin down to a stop and try again
and again
and again
and again

Queens still has Select Auto Electric. A bunch of Indian Guyaneese guys. You walk in and put you starter or alternator and all you hear is "Wats wrong with it" And How many amps you want, $5 an amp over stock.

Years ago I Pulled dropouts at a salvage yard. Watching the core guys come through was bananas.

Since we are on the topic. If someone here wants to source brushes etc for an LS alternator or whatever… anyone have any bookmarks?

Yea that was another thing... back in the car audio days take a stock alternator to Jimmy Ray's "I can usually get 120 amps out of these. Leave her here and I'll see what I can do". Come back the next day "she did 124 on the bench but our equipment is off... she'll do 130 amps on the motor no problem. That'll be $25. $30 if you need a receipt."

Yep. Our jimmy was finch here in Houston. First went to him when I had to rebuild an alternator in mechanics class in high school, around ‘92 or 93. He would gladly sell you the parts so you can put it together for yourself. Hell, I still have a tackle box with his new parts in it somewhere. Used him off and on mostly for tractor or hard to find stuff. He just closed up shop a few months ago. If you have his number you can stop by his house and he will still fix your alternator or starter for you. :smokin:

When my buddy worked for a rebuilder, he would up the amperage for us. I have probably 3 of his alts in my garage around the 120-130a range for an old Jeep and he made them “one wire” too. :smokin:
