Yes, I know the 05 up SD 60 is superior, but the 99-04 60 is still capable of being used, as is older KP stuff (we beat on those axles for years). That being said, I have a 99-04 that was damn near free and already all cleaned up. Also have the Artec truss kit for it already, so I intend to use it for my Mall Crawler Minivan (2014 JKU) build. I do have my doubts on the 30 spline stubs in stock form for sure, but am on the fence of what route to go here.

Option 1, 30 spline chromos and hope for the best (Not too keen on this idea).
Option 2, Bored unit bearings and 35 spline chromos. (This option works, but requires me to need 3 bored out bearings so that I have a spare. At $475 a piece, plus a set of stubs at $150ish each, I'm in the $1900 range to have to go this route, plus I need lockouts)
Option 3, Spyntec Freespin Kit. (This is 35 spline, includes lockouts, includes stubs, and as a bonus has the correct tone rings for the JK for roughly $1900 to my door. That doesnt include any spare parts, so I would need to buy a spare stub at a minimum. Only other componet that would be oddball and would be nice to have as a spare would be a spindle. The bearings are all off the shelf parts.

I am leaning towards the Spyntec for sure, with that being said, does anyone have any experience with this kit at all? Quality worth a shit? Anyone happen to know if the stubs are off the shelf application or are they custom to the freespin kit?

What about the spindles? Those have to be proprietary. It would suck to ever have an issue with a bearing and wipe out a spindle.

If I were you, I'd get 2 new 35 spline unit bearings and stubs. Then carry 1 stock UB, stub and lock out.

Option 4, knuckle swap from either 94-99 Dodge or ford 92-97 D60s. Ford everything or dodge knuckle with either D50(TTB) or D60 spindles and hubs and ford stubs. Dodge knuckles are “high steer” if you need that.

I’m literally pondering this myself. Building a 99-04 because I need Yukon lockouts. The 05+ isn’t strong enough.

I’m leaning on bored out unit bearings because I feel this option isn’t proprietary as the free spin kit. I also have a lathe at work and could possibly just do them myself.

If Yukon made lockouts for 05+ stuff this would be a no brainer.

What's wrong with Warn's?

Why couldn’t you just make your own free spin kit with 92-97 knuckles? Then it’s all the same old same old Ford spindle, hub, bearings and spindle.

I’ve seen the factory ones break and warn does have the version for 05+ but if it’s the same pop metal cast shit I’ll pass. Haven’t seen them personally though. But I doubt they’re similar to Yukons.

I picked up a set of Yukon hubs for $100 from a guy who couldn’t figure out how to unlock them. So that’s why I’m down this rabbit hole.

Genuninely interested in your thoughts.

Street driven rig will need lockouts. I’ve broken warn premiums before. Are the 05+ versions better.? I realize this is an expensive way to get to Yukon lockouts with a more inferior unit bearing.

Branik will machine your current unit bearings for 35 spline for like $75 ea.

And sell you an 8 on 170 35 spline Timken for a spare for $360.

Looks like for $510 you can have 3 unit bearings.

Feel free to spend $1900 to feel better about it.
The 2 I have I wouldnt trust to machine due to not knowing the age, so its $720 for 2 unit bearings (yes a little cheaper than the $475 each for the ones through ECGS). $175 a piece for stubs, and $300 for lockouts. $1320 total. Much more than $510, but less than $1900.

That being said, after digging some more tonight, I think this is the route I'm going to go with the Branik UB's. Need to call tomorrow and see if they are available with the tone rings installed though, if not I'll end up just running my front ABS sensors to the rear and calling it good. Ill just carry my current stock shafts and the best of the current UB's as spares to at least get back home or to the trailer.

You're overthinking this.
Jeeps come factory with no lock outs. You don't need lockouts.

Well shit…..thanks for the link.

Personally I like lockouts. I’ve unlocked different axles when somethings failed and easier to trouble shoot problems too.

I was really considering just running slugs but I drive it 500ish miles a month.
