Been running one of these surplus H case lockers for a bit now. Wanted to discuss a few things.
When I bought one I read plenty of internet BS about them. "Stay away from circletrack lockers! They are built different! They only freewheel the right side tire!" This is false. Both sides ratchet just fine. No different from right to left. Before I installed mine I split the case to have a look.
Same spring on either side. Can't say if they are stiffer than a civilian detroit but they don't seem any louder or more aggressive than a standard one.
The biggest downside to these is the large side bearing requires a 3.25" journal aftermarket case. That's the deal breaker for most. Funny thing is at $220 each for this detroit you can buy a speedway carrier at $280 in stock, have it together and on the trail before the civilian unit ($710) will even be cut at the eaton factory with current lead times and you will still have $200 left over for beer. Or if your extremely frugal and a little tenacious you can run the 9.375" case for an additional savings over the speedway unit.
Seems like a no brainer to me. I'm sure some on here aren't comfortable running 31 spline axles and I get that. Im not on 42's so I just carry a spare and sleep easy at night.
The other thing I wanted to discuss is current nascar rule changes. I don't follow the organization at all but I hear they switched to IRS. Not sure if they still run a ford 9" center but this could mean the surplus may dry up soon. Any nascar buffs feel free to chime in here.
Mostly wanted to bust some internet myths and shed some light on a pretty rad setup I stumbled upon this spring. I haven't dove into the bearing side of things but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a combination that could fit a stock size journal.
