shouldn't the U bolt go around the axle?
Just seeing that now, super sketchy setup. looks prone to fucking off on you at the worst times

Got er out of the shop for the first time in awhile. After cutting out all the driver side floor rusty spots and holes I patched it up with some 16 guage. Also rebuilt front cab corner and made a new cab mount. Not trying to be fancy here just trying to make the floorboards solid. I borrowed a little lincoln 140 mig welder and a spool of .030 flux core wire to do this and holy hell did that suck. Welds like shit so I just did what I can and stiched all the panels I made in with that and will bring it to work to clean it up and fill gaps and properly weld the new cab mount on. again not pretty but happy with how it’s turning out so far, just needs some finishing up.

Needs a new clutch before I can drive it to work first though, it’s pretty much an automatic lol. Let off the clutch as hard as you want and it just slips and the motor doesn’t die. only gets up and moves when you pin it.

I’m thinking about trying to strip the john deere green spray paint off this thing and get it back down to the factory blue. Everyone on the internet just recommends their company’s specific product to strip one shitty layer of paint, but i’m wondering if anyone has had luck with just acetone? any thoughts ?

Brake fluid will strip paint pretty good. 😂

I'd be interested in knowing how to remove a layer of paint also. My paint job ended up not being very tough. When it goes to hell it's going to need to be completely removed, at least to the original paint. I was recommended jasco paint remover by a guy who seems to know stuff. But I'm pretty sure that will take it to bare metal.

At work I clean heavy equipment parts like quick change linkages and cylinders with acetone before I repaint them, and it seems to leave factory paint on but takes off older shittier paint so that’s my thinking in that might be able to rub off the spray bomb green and leave factory paint

with a new clutch, ground flywheel, all new bearings and new slave this thing rips. Can’t wait to pull the box off and back half the frame, than it’s going to be wheeling time. My buddy pulled about a third of my passenger fender off today in chunks of bondo, so might be going fibreglass for new front fenders as i think these ones are too far gone

Anyone have suggestions for commen bench seats that fit decent in these pickups? not confident i’ll be able to find a factory bench in decent shape so on the hunt for something else that will fit

I’m interested in a what benches fit a 1st gen also. I need to be an able to fit the little between my wife and I for while. I haven’t had a chance to do any Google-fu yet. If I come up with anything I’ll report back.

Got the truck out for its first real test drive. Does great in the terrain around where I live. Did a bunch of sxs roads like the video with steep loose stuff and everything worked great, although I could have aired down more. After probably an hour of that kind of driving I was going along a super brushed in old mine road and went to shift from first to second and as soon as I pushed the clutch in the truck died. Didn’t want to fire back up without a squirt of brake clean down the carb, and i had to hold the pedal to 2000rpm for it to stay running the rest of the drive. Died soon as I let off or even when shifting I had to keep my foot in it. Any carb wizards have an idea what to tear into first? Nothing looked visibly wrong but i figure I need to check all the vacuum lines etc.

Frame really isn’t too bad for soft spots and holes, but decided it’s time to start reinforcing it to prepare for the bearing this thing is going to take on hunting trips

I'll second the 2/3rz swap. since yours is carbed the harness should be a ton simpler than integrating into the OEM harness.
Wish I would have stripped mine down and did a stand alone. The RZs have a very similar footprint the the 22r series engines.

Nice project you have going on here.

Finished reinforcing the frame, took the 3in body lift off and threw some toyota 489 beige paint at er. Pretty happy with the paint job for a bush truck. Looks good enough from a distance but not good enough up close that i’m scared to scrape it up in the bush. Running well driving well, although burning oil like crazy. About 120kms of highway and the oil level was pretty low on the dip stick.

Pretty set on the tdi swap now as I want good mpg’s and a bit more torque. I’m thinking of looking for an alh donor car and getting a trans and getting everything setup over the winter. I’m going to build my own adapter plate unless I find one for a deal. I’m thinking of buying a w56 and using it to mock up my adapter plate and then install with the motor. I know that it will be 5” or so longer than my l50, but that way if I mount it in somewhat of a stock location I should be able to use my stock drivelines and tcase, and gain some firewall clearance with the tdi. Any thoughts?

This is my favorite tdi swap build. Bummer that the pictures don’t work anymore. I may have the thread saved locally somewhere. I’ll have to check.
