What's new

5 or 6 day Driving tour of Maine or Vermont in the fall ?

I think of Burlington as the Northeast's Seattle.
More like Olympia, but not quite as bad. Just some homeless hanging around the downtown area, didn't see any camps and it wasn't too sketchy. Lots of cool history there and was a worthwhile stop I thought. :flipoff2:

Parasite comment here. . . .

Which area do y'all recommend for a two-night stay to explore upper New Hampshire/Vermont? Wife and I are flying in and out of Portland and need an AirBnB base camp. We've been to Maine (Bangor, Acadia, Lubec areas). She hasn't been to NH or VT. ~25yrs ago I visited Concord & Loudon , NH, and Woodstock, VT areas.

Lancaster NH area? Close to Mt Washington and the NEK.

That's part of why I said roadster.

Where is that? Drove from Boston to my folks place in Van Buren and I swear even memere in the 79 Deville smoking Virginia Slims passed me doing 20+ mph over.

I get a chuckle when I say I'm from Northern Maine and people go... "Bangor?"
Uh.. no, that's southern Maine.

Seriously, that is one thing I will NEVER get used to here. 1a, 95, route 9, even the back roads, it’s ALWAYS someone with a Maine plate just toddling along at 5 to 10 below the limit. It’s maddening. I’ve gotten real good at passing multiple cars at a time on back roads real quick. And some of the bizarre maneuvers I see around here just blow my mind. Like coming to a full and complete stop to turn into their driveway, or, arguably worse, if their driveway is on the left, they will cross over into the opposite lane for a couple of hundred yards before stopping in the wrong lane to turn into their driveway. Stopping dead in the middle of the road to let someone turn out onto the road when they have no reason to do so, etc.

My pepere would do the wrong lane into driveway de. And they lived direct off Route 1, so 55mph traffic.

He petty much did 45mph, didn't matter if it was a 25 or 65 speedlimit.

Back when my mom worked in a nursing home she had a story of some patient that was driving way up north and came to a complete stop on I95 to let someone merge and got obliterated by a log truck.

The letting someone in from the left almost got me a couple times after living in the DC area for years!

We could fly into Bangor or Portland

Not set on flying into Boston

Boston wasn't bad to fly into and you can go up the coast from there, Newport, Mystic and Salem were all pretty cool. The robber baron mansions in Newport was one of my highlights. Also the sea museum in Mystic was pretty cool. Salem was badass, but don't go there in October...it's a whole thing and we had no idea

I can tell you for damn sure either of those is going to be much easier to fly into and get out of than Boston will be. Both are small airports with Bangor being the smallest terminal despite having the largest runway in New England. I’ve now flown in and out of both. Love Bangor airport but flight booking can be tricky or more expensive at times. I know whenever we have family come visit from CA it’s usually a 3 leg flight and an all day affair.

There are weekend tunnel closures that affect Logan Airport through the fall. Do not fly into Boston.

I would include staying in Errol, NH. Puts them close to the above and the Rangeley lakes region.
I just realized I have 160 hours of PTO to take by the end of the year and will carry another 40 over. So I might take my own advice and trailer the jeep up to Errol and drive the family around for a few days. I’ll see what the bride thinks when I get done dropping a deuce

Flight shopping on Delta was amusing yesterday. Detroit/DTW to BGR had direct summertime routes years ago, but now routes have gone stupid. Connections through LGA (fuck that place!) or ATL were most common options. Ridiculous routes were DTW-ATL-LGA-BGR, or DTW-MSP-LGA-BGR. Since miles and/or segments are a thing of the past, no thank you.

Flights to Boston were surprisingly in expensive <$300.

I settled on Portland. Outbound has 1 stop in JFK (an outer ring of airport hell) and the return is direct. Delta offered DTW-ATL-PWM with a 36min layover

Choose your own route, but something like this

Yeah, it’s pretty damn ridiculous. Iirc when we went back to CA to visit, we flew Bangor to Charlotte to San Diego. Flight back was San Diego to charlotte to Philadelphia where we missed our connect due to the flight from charlotte leaving late and we got stuck in Philly overnight to catch a flight to Bangor the next morning. Same thing when we went to Disney world back in February. Not only were flights to Orlando from Bangor way more expensive, there were no direct flights available. It was actually cheaper and easier to drive down to Portland the night before and stay at a hotel at the airport and fly direct from Portland the next morning instead. (About a 3 hour drive from Ellsworth to Portland)

Never been to Acadia, but my folks many other people I know enjoy it. Might add that to the list of stops.

Just booked a house for a few days. Going to trailer the jeep and ranger up and take a canoe. Just bought a short term fishing license. Staying up north and going to try to move around as fast as the wife, kid , dogs can go.

I just returned from 6 days in the northeast. Wifey got to check NH, VT, and MA off her list. Lots of windshield time but that was the plan.

Day 1: Fly to Portland then on to Bangor mostly via route 1. Got detoured by citizens in hi-vis vests around Belfast. Don't know why, but it was odd.
Day 2: Hike and swim around the southwest side of Acadia. Drove through Bar Harbor but didn't stop because I couldn't find convenient parking for the Ram rental truck. Ate dinner in Ellsworth.
Day 3: Bangor to North Conway, NH via route 2. Drove up Mt. Washington ~20min before close. ~50' visibility, 40mph+ winds, and rain were not in our favor for the ~2miles before the summit. Earned the bumper sticker on that day, lol.
Day 4: North Conway to Stowe, VT. Hit the turn-off attractions along the Kancamagus. Passed through East Corinth to check out the Beetlejuice sites. Stopped in Woodstock, VT for lunch and shopping. Then onward to Stowe for more shopping and a stay at the Trapp Family Lodge.
Day 5: Drive back to Portland with longer stops in Salem and Kennebunkport. Stowe to Salem was mostly highway. We took 1 from Salem to Kennebunkport, then 95 in to Portland because it was nighttime.
Day 6: 5:30AM departure, direct to DTW.

Highlights: the roadside turnoffs for scenery, rivers, and hiking trails in NH and VT.
Lowlights: Many things related to Massachusetts.

you hit all the yuppie villages, but definitely good sights in between.

Good choice on staying at the Trapps’

I don't have much to add.
I went to Squirrel island by Boothbay harbor one summer with my girlfriend and her parents one summer. It was nice from what I remember, but I was more into seeing the sights of my girlfriend.

Detour in Belfast may have been due to windmill parts being transported thru. Been happening daily for a month and a half now all over this area. Been causing a lot of traffic issues and more than one part has run into major troubles on the road to wherever they are taking them up north. Iirc that may have been the day that one of the transport trucks clipped a bridge and rolled on route 1. Shut a piece of the road down for a day and a half while they worked to clear it. Citizens were most likely volunteer firefighters as we have a lot of them here.

We rolled through there last Tuesday night. The windmill transport issue is more sensible than my irresponsible speculation of being lead to a tourist slaughterhouse.

Yeah I don’t recall for sure what day that particular incident was but that sounds in the vicinity. I got stuck behind what I can only assume was a pole section for a good 30 miles on route 1 heading up to machias for the blueberry festival a week ago, they really have been screwing up traffic more than normal

Did you hit Clarks Bears and Trading Post? Went and did a day trip there for the first time a few weeks ago, family had a good time, I liked the steam locomotive stuff, and looking at all the single mothers looking for a step dad
