What's new

4Runner Crawler notabuild thread

Well got it back together over the weekend. Took a piece of plate over the old "truss" bars and put new link tabs on. Should last while I get parts together to fully truss and rework some of the suspension.

I was also able to rebuild the coilover. Afepower took over the sway-a-way shock stuff at some point and I was able to buy a new shaft and a rebuild kit. Rebuilt both rear coulovers. One note is the valves to recharge were a slightly different thread than standard. Luckily the rebuild kit included new valves which match the fox or King thread.

Pics of the broken shafy once it was removed:

Turned out I fucked up the rebuild a bit and didn't do the coilovers right. Drove a bit and realized I had no rebound damping
.
Rebuilt today. Haven't had a chance to really test but seems like I figured it out. Set the IFP at 6.5 inches.

Filled the body with a bit more fluid, cycled the IFP to bleed air out of the line. Added more fluid, put the shaft in, cycled to get air out of the valve/shim stack, added a bit more fluid and re-assembled.

Hopefully that was about right. Seems to ride a lot better although maybe a bit stiff

Well, went and ran around silverton/Ouray a couple weeks ago. Only had one day of trail time because my wife had to fly out to the uk for work. Ran corkscrew, California, mineral creek, Poughkeepsie, engineer and some others.
Group I was with winched a guy off the edge:

Doesn't look too bad but it was a steep side as most of the trails are.

Fun came for me later in the day when I had a hydraulic line blow out for the steering. Turned out it had twisted and the alternator pulley wore through the hose. Happened in the middle of a switchback. Luckily, I had a spare hose and enough fuild to repair and get off the mountain

And shortly after getting that fixed my buddies wheel fell off:

Overall had a great time. Rebuilding the rear coilovers and recharging all the coilovers seemed to improve the ride speed. I would still like to improve the ride and bump absorption at speed and will likely start trying to figure that out.

Guess I'll be swapping some new axles in. Picked up a GM dana 60 and a 14 bolt over the weekend. Might put off the auto swap for awhile.

If anyone has parts to swap to and auto I might be interested still.

If any of the parts on the axles are of interest to someone, let me know. Will use different high steer arms and likely a different ram.
