Yeah, I know LC engineering is the best you can buy but I'm cheap. Does anyone have experience with a reman long block from auto zone or oreillys? Lots of mixed reviews on their sites.

The only parts store 22R I've been up close with was in a truck I daily drove for a little bit that apparently came apart shortly after I sold it. I DID drive it like it was sponsored but a 22R should take that with no issue.

I'd rebuild one at home before I bought a reman, especially if you're trying to do it cheap. Most remans are done by mostly unskilled labor in Mexico at this point and they're a total crap shoot on getting one that isn't a piece of shit.

Buddy of mine bought a head from autozone for the 5se and he went through 4 before he got a decent one. He still had to lap the valves to make it work okay.

$200 if you’re near Pollock Pines

Pull it apart, buy a kit, bore and hone and bolt it together is waaaaaay better than go/no go fitment on a reman.

Remember plasti-guess? I trust me using that over a reman.

I lost an engine at Pismo due to the wingnut coming off the air cleaner. I ball honed, put rings and bearings in it and got 100k more out of it for like $400 back in the day.

EDIT… was my 2nd rebuild ever with a single toolbox and a book, this was around 1990.

Ducktape I will find you a runner ! But, everyone is right the rebuilders are junk . I have an unmentionable amount of experience with the largest rebuilder and have spent many hours of my life fighting denied claims, replacing bad “new” engines and compiling data to prove high percentage of failure on sooooooooo many platforms.

Rebuilders or Remanufactures?

I learned the difference. :homer:

I'll just say lifetime warranty, and leave it at that.:homer::laughing:.

Stay as far away as possible

Is there a specific kit you would recommend?

These guys know their shit

That’s a 22re I linked above I would go buy that whole truck and swap it in .

oh shit i didnt realize 22re performance had split

Referencing this information I assume it’s the same engine minus the fuel injection being swapped over .
From the link you actually posted, it's more than that.

I've bolted 85+ EFI onto an early 80's long block. I know I had to drill a hole in the exhaust manifold, weld up the intake manifold bracket, and tap a hole for (I think) the knock sensor.

I didn’t read that far, I don’t know shit about Toyotas but it looked promising .

The only real difference in 20/22R's is deck height. 83/84 are taller deck the 85 up. All heads will interchange. 85 up has square intake ports, all earlier ones are the same. The manifolds will physically bolt up but the ports are mismatched.

I know you said that you’re going the cheap route, but if you change your mind…

Hands down Jim Putney. You know I have mental problems and that I’m am a picky SOB. I can’t say enough great things about the motors he turns out. Have his motors in a couple of our trucks now, including the red one you saw years ago. He’s actually building us a boosted one right now. He turns out a solid product and stands behind his work. He’s also got quality parts / kits if you’re going to tackle it yourself.

Haven’t dealt with DOA, but had a HORRIBLE experience with Wes at LCE. Took a letter from an attorney threatening lawsuit and approx 6 months to get all our money back. Just my experience….

Hey, nice to hear from ya! This motor is going in the same pickup I was in back then.

?? No it's not.
Read more into this because as stupid as I felt the interwebs said mid 85 everything except the EFI was the same 22r vs 22re and tonight as boring as it may sound I dug into it again and yes the engine above in the link would be perfect like I thought just have to swap over efi. There’s a debate if the cams are different because they have different part #’s but supposedly they’re the same profile .

May not be interested in the methy option I posted but good info to have if you run into more swap options .

Crazy you know about them half way accros the country. They are local to where I grew up and had always heard nothing but good. Just was never sure how well known they were.

The individual coil pack set up is interesting :smokin:
