I know this isn’t exactly a 4x4 vehicle, but I am pulling my hair out over my daughter’s car. It is a 2017 Ford Edge Sport is has the 2.7 eco boost. Because Guthrie it thinking she would have something safe and reliable in 2021 when used car prices absolutely sucked. About 6 months after we got it, she was going down highway, accelerated and it showed every alarm in the dash and went into limp mode. Pulled over, shut it off, and everything cleared and started right up like nothing happened. Took it to dealer because it was under warranty, as expected they found nothing, told me battery module needed reset, and tha was it. It was fine for about 3 months, did it again a couple time. It has done it about 8 times in the last year and a half. It sucks because it is under acceleration and I am worried she is going to get in a wreck due to this piece if crap. Saw 2015 had some issues with throttle body, replaced that, didn’t fix it. Changed plugs, didn’t fix it. Tonight after pulling codes and resetting modules and computer, pulled ground cable for couple hours to try to reset computer. We will see if this helps. I cannot recreate it. I have tried many times. It did it this morning, I drove the crap out of it tonight after work, nothing.

Last two times, here are the codes I get.

any ideas how to figure this out?

Well, it's got a CAN network issue, that Edge has 4 networks total, one medium speed network and three high speed networks. You've got some stuff on the medium speed that are losing comm with modules running on High Speed 1, some on HS2 that can't talk to HS1 etc... They all come together and talk across the Gateway module which in those cars is the data link connector itself. Those were brand new when I left the dealer and hadn't been an issue yet for me personally but I do recall hearing about problems with those smart DLCs. That's the only thing shared by all the networks and it would be suspect #1 if I was trying to diagnose your problem.

You might try unplugging the electrical connector from the back of it and plugging it back in as a short term fix, Ford has had quite a few issues with terminal fretting and poor pin fit over the last 10 years or so.

Teach your daughter to merge properly and losing power will be a "whoops I guess it's time to coast to the shoulder" sized problem and not "an 18 wheeler is up my ass" sized problem.

She has no problem merging. That is not the issue. A car doing 55 mph then suddenly in limp mode, basically like shutting the key off and losing all power is the issue. Thanks for the help though.

You're talking to someone who has the wrong sock filter on his pump and loses fuel if he stays in a hard curve too long at too low a fuel level.

I know exactly what "engine not running mid merge" is like. It happens to me about once every two weeks. It's not the end of the world. It's a minor embarrassment. If you know how to drive and are not trying to roll the ramp at 20-30 on and off the brakes as you turn up your nose at perfectly fine spots and then magically be going 65 when you decide that one is good enough at the last minute as you run out of ramp.

This makes sense, not sure how to trouble shoot this. Is this DLC located by where the OBD2 connection is?

Is that seat position sensor code always set at the time of the loss of power or is it just stored? Something shorting to ground will take down everything on the network. Check the wires for that and see if the car can be driven with the seat position sensor unplugged. Look for junk under the seat that can interfere with the wires to the seat.

I have to go look at my old logs, but I think it has just showed up the last two times. I was thinking it was a ground issue so I was looking for something. I did look under the seat quickly last night to see if I could see anything. I will dig into that. When I do a self test on the Driver Seat Module, the error shows up from the test. I am going to pull codes every couple days or so and see what shows up. This happened twice in the last week, Saturday evening and yesterday morning. It might not happen again for 4 months. No engine light or nothing. I have tried to make it happen by accelerating, that seems to be when it happens, while i have forscan hooked up. Of course it has only happened to me once and I didn't have the computer with me.

Have you tried accelerating from 0 to whatever on the rumble strip? That's my go to for intermittant electrical since you'll hit pretty much every frequenty.

I have not. It has happened on the highway just cruising at 55, slight acceleration, everything on dash lights up sounds go off, transmission shifts weird, limp mode decelerates fast. It happens turning right onto a street, hard or normal acceleration then dies. I drove like a total asshole for 45 mins yesterday trying to make it happen, no luck. The communication makes sense and why every single module light pops up, advance trac control, engine, transmission, abs steering. Maybe I make her drive my 1979 carbureted F150.

In for the solution.

With canbus/multiple failure the battery had a short. Or, mostly fords, the power cable/distribution weird ass fuse block was broken, corroded, or otherwise bad connection.

I changed the battery a summer ago. Ford said something about the battery and reset the module. Did not fix.

According to Ford I have one of these. I have to dig into the dash tomorrow night. My OBD2 port is jut a connection, need to take cover off and chase the. Wire.
Did you buy this thing used? Some fleet/rental companies have pass through/piggyback devices that will plug into the car's OBD2 connector then have another poty that is actually exposed so you can plug a scanner in. I bet you've got the real DLC/gateway module stuffed up in the dash and some bobo ass GPS/Telemetry shit plugged into it if the one you're scanning through is just a wire.

It was used, but one owner lady that had it serviced and bought it new from someplace as we bought it. It was not fleet or rental. I need to get under the dash tonight. I just put in VIN and data link in ford parts and this came up. Seems like these were in them from 2015 to 2018. What I’d did see was just the OBD2 plug with wires combing out the back going up into the dash. I will check what is there tonight. This seems to me like it has to be computer/software/module related. If it was a physical connection issue, wouldn’t it at least get worse or more frequent? It is completely random.

Ok, did it again last night. I pulled codes last week, and everything was clear. Just pulled codes. Here is what I pulled. Again, all communication, except the seat rear height position sensor and rear height motor circuit failure.

i guess i need to find out where that motor is. I have looked under seat, there is like 50 wires hooked up to the seat. It is rear height so i figure I can find the motor, I assume the sensor is near or in the motor. I will have to check.
