What's new

1993 Explorer - Built to Smash

Ran a derby I've always wanted to run over Labor Day weekend. Was $1500 to win which was sweet. I didn't win though.

I spent 2 hours cutting shit to make the inspectors happy and went out on the track with not much left. A kid I know who is friends with a buddy of mine wanted to run together so I made a deal with him.

Once it got down to about 8 of us he decided to give me the big ol fuck you and gave my left rear a full track shot. It broke my axle and put me on 3 tires. Somehow I was able to stay in the competition and made it down to what should have been 3rd place. They fucked up and counted me as 4th. Oh well. I'm retiring this thing now. Six total runs, three wins, 1 third, 1 fourth, and that stupid DQ. Onto the next one!

I had another wierd question(s) about derby

Do you just run 1st and reverse?

Would there be a benefit to more speed in reverse? Or having your driveshaft higher?

I have wondered if flipping the axle over would be a benefit, you obviously get a high pinion, 1 forward and 3 or 4 reverse gears. Just no idea if that would help anything

Most of the time I'm in first or reverse. If the track is muddy or long I'll hit second but mostly just first. There are trans builders that sell units that only have first and reverse, but those are for the fullsize car or truck guys that are really serious about derby. I just run the stock shit.

Usually I'm going forward more than reverse, and these things actually get going pretty fast in reverse anyway. I once saw a big gay mud truck that had a 3 speed auto in front of a 4 speed manual. Was pretty cool seeing/hearing it hit 3 gears in reverse.
