87 4runner going big(ger)

I thought you could bolt an R151 to the 1UZ. Leaf Springs and Manual Trans party pretty
You can but the adaptor is spendy. You could aw4(or aw4 tailhousing) and toss an 4 speed atlas behind it.

Buddy is building a buggy and it’s 1uz, a340(aw4 tailhousing), ecobox/205. Built proof and no real adapters. Mine is 1uz, a340, dual 231s. Crawls great but it is my snow wheeler.

I thought about this as well. R151 is hard to source in my area and when i do find one, theyre $$$. I could do R150 from a 3.0 truck but they come with chain cases. Itd just be an adapter before and after the trans. At that point, itd make sense to get a decent th400.

That is an idea! I just dont have a ton of faith in the a341 that it currently has.

I love the 1uz as well but the simple hookup of an LS style engine with the Holley setup is whats drawing me in. I have an 84 pickup that i 1uz swapped about 10 years ago that needs a rebuild, so this 1uz from the runner wouldnt just be tossed out. Just a ton of work in my future

Couldn’t pass up a deal! -38 though. Gonna end up being wiiiide

My brother has a 1uz turboed/aw4/atlas combo in his 4runner. Combo does really good for what abuse he puts it through. Did a HD rebuild on the aw4 and after blowing 3 dana 300's he finally bit the bullet and did the atlas and has been super happy with it.

What engine management is he running?

He is using microsquirt I believe with wasted spark setup. I used that when I built my old buggy and turbo 2rz. Ill see if he can send me a few pictures and details. He also ended up using coils from a different vehicle. Ill talk to him today and get some more info.

I have debated this. Ive wanted a turbo 1uz something for a long time. Kinda just thinking about parts availability and ease of work out on the trail. The 5.3 checks those boxes for me but im definitely interested about the engine management for it. I have my 1uz powered 84 that may get boosted later on.

I’ve heard good things about spittronics the price is good with harness. But I’d like some real world experience not from the YouTube!

Alright it is confirmed he has Ford EDIS for his spark setup. I have a few pictures as well. I helped him with majority of the build on his entire 4runner.

Added a little air to water intercooler with a heat exchanger in the back and electric water pump to keep IAT down. Does really well. Runs I think around 12lbs of boost. No idea HP number on it but she rips those 43 journeys pretty well
