Figured id do a build thread on my runner. I bought it bone stock in late February 2025. I had already planned to sas it eventually but after the 22re decided to start knocking after a week I figured its go time on hammering everything out.

I pulled it into the shop and cut the rear suspension out then pieced together a 63 spring swap utilizing excess parts from previous builds. I ordered a LROR frame side shock mount aswell as TG axle side mounts.

Moving onto the front i cut the ifs out and while I was up there i figured id yard the engine out to dig into it. With everything out of the way I cleaned up both passenger and driverside frame rails, plated both sides inside and out aswell as welded in the frame tubes, front hanger, and hanger gusseting. I rotated and pushed the steering box forward as far as possible without cutting into the core support.

Jumping over to the engine i found #3 rod bearing spun and wiped out the rod with it. At this time I also was planning a trip to drop off a bunch of core blocks at 22reraceworks for Jim to use as cores so I now had a time crunch. I pulled a older tall deck 22r into the shop that had been sitting in my driveway for about a year and found it was seized. After soaking it with atf and diesel i got it to free up, pulled the pan to inspect bottom end bearings, pulled the head and inspected the cylinders. Everything looked solid so I lapped the valves, installed new valve stem seals, decked the head and reinstalled it with a fresh set of head bolts and gasket. With the 22r buttoned up all I had left to do was drill and tap the block for the knock sensor.

Back to the front end I had a spare 84 axle out of one my other rigs I had just parted out I was able to use. I kept the stock 4.10s and just installed a grizzly locker as I honestly didn't know what I wanted to do as for as the end goal in this build goes at that time. So with a fresh set of bearings and seals in she went.

I dumped the engine in and fired it off just to have the cam go flat so I snagged a 260 delta cam and rocker arm assembly off another head I had sitting around. I ratchet strapped the front and rear of the head in place to keep it from lifting then proceeded onto pulling the old crap and flushing the engine with some cheap oil to clean out as much particulateas possible. Luckily i caught it just in time some not much was there to flush. With it buttoned back up with fresh oil and filter i verified it was good to go letting it run while I built the dual cases.

As for the dual cases I had a spare advanced adapters 21 spline adapter and a couple forward shift cases kicking around. I modified the shift forks and coverted them to topshift then assembled everything. One of my buddies makes crossmembers almost identical to trail gears so I had him whip me one up. I initially had planned to run a set of front range offroad twinsticks I had kicking around but got a killer deal on a new set of Northwest Fab triple sticks. So after a bit of time with an air hammer I clearanced trans tunnel and installed the whole shabang.

With a few days left before the 1700 mile round-trip drive it was time to rack up some miles! I hit the highway and logging roads with the wife. I worked out a few quirks, and buttoned up a few things on my buddies 87 4runner aswell before we loaded up and hit the road. We made the trip there and back going around Mt hood, MT Shasta, and up the California coast from the Redwoods all the way up to Longbeach Washington before hitting I-5 and heading home. The thing ran flawlessly the entire time 😎🤙
For awhile I didn't do much as I was dailey driving it 236 miles a day for work, took it back down to oregon then Idaho an Montana on a few separate trips. In that time I installed a Badlands Front bumper, 4xinnovations rear bumper and some fresh 35s

Shortly after buying the 35s I ended up regretting it and trading them for a set of brand new 37/14.5r15 sx2s which started a whole snowball effect. And ended up with me completely redoing the build. I forgot to mention that when I built it originally I used the factory rears springs up front and put some 300m rcvs in it.

Shortly after acquiring the sx2s I got a good deal on a 62" diamond axle housing with inner shafts. While sourcing out a tacoma 8.4 rear i snagged up some marlin crawler steering arms and lower caps with 25mm pins. I scored a 8.4 tacoma rear with 4.56s for free from a buddy and after welded an plated the spider gears, i welded shock mounts on it, bolted it under the runner and then yarded out the front end out.

I cut the orginal perches off the front axle due to the caster angle being set to -10° from the previous guys build and set it to 5°. After the caster angle was adjusted i snagged up a 8" 4.56 third, installed my grizzly locker, built the steering drag links, shimmed the knuckles and swapped over rcv birfs onto the inner shafts.

Due to my wife an I having a daughter just before we acquired the 4runner my pickup had been parked and I had been tossing around pulling all the goodies out of it to slap into the runner. Well after finding out we had a second on the way my mind was made up.

I was sick of the sx2s riding like sh*t so I swapped my grooved 38/15.5r15 mud grapplers onto it, cut up the rear corner panels for a bit more clearance and then welded them up after replacing a section on the verge of rotting out.

Shortly after the rear quarter panelsnwere done I pulled the r151f turbo trans and triple cases out of the truck that i had just built the previous winter, removed the front reduction box and set aside for my other build going on currently. Installed the r151f, built duals with 23 spline inputs and marlin comp 4.7s. And ran it up in the snow for a bit

With the 38s, beadlocks and 4.56s the 22re was definitely putting in the work. So out came the 8.4 rear and off it went to my buddy kspeterson96 to get 4.88s. I pulled the 4.88 high pinion arb third out of my pickup I setup the previous year and installed it in the front. Once the rear was done I installed it, broke it in then took it down to oregon. I tell you what I forgot how nice it was to have 4.88s and 38s wheeling let alone on the freeway 🤣

With the only thing left out of the original drivetrain being the 22re it was time to swap it out. After months of my buddy hounding on me to dump an rz into it he finally snagged up exactly what I was looking for. A totaled tacoma with 134k on it and a healthy 2rz. I snagged it up from him for $1500, got my hands on a 2tr bellhousing, ordered up a rear sump oil pan, pickup tube, chilkat motor mounts an a stainless steel ebay header. With the 2rz on my engine stand I swapped the rear sump setup on it, checked the valve lash and reshimmed where needed. Ditched the egr and installed a new rear main just to be safe.
Once the 2rz was buttoned up I pulled the 22re, swapped over the bellhousing, rerouted the slave cylinder line, pulled the old exhaust and then dumped the 2rz in.
I utilized the 22re heater core lines, ran the fuel return/feed lines, power steering, routed the engine harness into the cab after drilling a hole in the firewall and test fit the header. I ended up pushing the fuel and brake lines as far over as possible then wrapped the header and first 7-8' of the exhaust. The rz radiator hoses worked perfect with the 22re radiator aswell. I spliced the rz and 4runner body harnesses together and built a bracket for the maf and air filter.
With everything wrapped up i was pretty impressed with how everything was basically plug and play with the exception of some quick wiring.
I tell you what that 2rz was exactly what this runner needed, that an I also snagged up a new set of radial 37/12.5r15 iroks on beadlocks. This thing absolutely rips now on the highway and has all the power I need on the trails! Here soon it will be getting a low boost super charger, rock sliders, exo cage and 3 linked up front. I already have a tube bender, and 4wu link kit so ill be getting started on all that here soon 🤙🤙

You have done a lot of work to this thing in one year. Well done!

How's the quality on the Badlands front bumper? Hadn't heard of them but might have them make me one of their flat tops if they're good.

Great, one of my all time favorites but the owner has since passed. From what I've been told outlaw overland in Kent Washington may be able to build them as the owners supposedly worked there back in the day and have access to the jobs. It could be hearsay but worth a shot to call them up

Well got the rock sliders on finally, both my axles showed up aswell as the last bit of my link parts! I ordered up the high boost supercharger, link standalone and ecu so when I what for them to be shipped I'll get the suspension buttoned up

With your old one being 62" I assume that's before hubs? What will the final WMS be?
Looking forward to seeing the next phase of upgrades.

That's also what I'm struggling with. There must be a missing part to this puzzle.

Got the tacoma width rock assault housing installed in the rig with the new elocker after welding in the perches and shock mounts then installing a skys offroad disk brake conversion

With the rear axle wrapped up I had to bust ass on the 3 link. I had just under a week to get everything wrapped up and on the road for a trip to cali! I cut out the old shock hoops and exhaust where it crossed over, then tacked in the frame side link mounts, got everything tacked in place on the axle and slid it under the 4runner. I got the panhard and drag links set parallel at ride height then moved the axle up to full bump and set the bump stops. With everything cycling good and set i started burning everything in with the exception of the shock towers. Once the axle and frame side mounts were done I ran on coilover collapsed and the other full extended then cycled the axle till the tops of both were even height wise off the ground. With the number set I started mocking up up towers making sure I could clear the maf and brake booster with little to no modification. Once the towers were burned in we pulled everything and painted it then redid the exhaust and set the new crossmember.

With everything wrapped up at 7pm Thursday, we loaded up the 4runner with 4 blocks, 4 cranks and all our camping gear, my buddy loaded his rig up with my 3rz shortblock, another 22re shortblock and 14 5 gallon gas cans because **** california fuel prices. We were on the road by 730pm Thursday and after 740 miles we hit redbluff cali at 12pm Friday. Not a single ****ing hickup and it drove flawlessly considering there was no shake down run or test drive. We hung out till Saturday evening at the koa down the road from 22reraceworks while the wizard (Jim Putney) worked his magic machining 2 22re blocks and my 3rz block.

Once Saturday evening rolled around we loaded up the 3 blocks in the back of the 4runner and took off over highway 36 to the redwoods. We stayed just south of the avenue of the giants that night then drove through up to crecent city Sunday, Monday we continued up 101 to Tillamook and Tuesday we drove to longbeach then jumped over to i5 for the last bit of the drive arriving home at 8pm
