SxS general discussion thread

Those exhaust studs get really weak after some heat cycling. We break them every time we've got to pull them out.
Yep. It didnt just back out. There's a piece still in the hole. I gotta pull the whole header off the get in there to get it out. Fun..

Is it true that yamaha is dropping the yxz? I was really wanting to try out a 24 up and see how it was to drive. Sure would be nice if they came out with something new.

They are only good for short course racing and at the dunes. Im surprised they lasted this many years without any major updates to the model.

The wife and I spent 4 nights up in Mena AR running the scenic trails for our 10th anniversary. It was a little lame for my liking but she loved it. Sunday afternoon I found a couple of sketchy trails high up in the mountians, so it wasn't a complete waste.

This was part of one of the sketchy trails I found. Pictures do it no justice and the trail was barely wider than my KRX. The drop on the passenger side was several hundred feet and my wife was not impressed. Trail was probably at a 40° angle up and there was a sheer wall on the drivers side. Very cool....

I found a SxS only offshoot that was off this trail that was rowdy as heck. Big rocks, steep climbs, steep decents, tight as ****, and it went on forever. :smokin:

If you notice in the first picture I brought that stupid ****ing windshield. There wasn't a single time in 4 days/nights of riding where me or my wife thought having it on was a good idea. We laughed at all the others riding around sweating their asses off with windshields and sometimes full cab enclosures. They looked pretty goofy riding around with soft windows flapping in the breeze and their hands out trying to direct cool air in. :lmao:

And don't even get me started on the ****tards in their $60k HVAC rigs driving around in nature with all the windows up sealed off to the nature they came to enjoy. Those same ****tards are also the ones who drive around wet spots and rough spots on these groomed dirt roads...... :shaking:

I cant give my poly windshield away, completely useless even with the vents.... only thing i kinda regret buying for my machine, luckily it wasnt stupid expensive at the time. I dont mind the glass one I have now because its easier to clean and i can get it out of the way with three thumb screws... But it stays folded down on the hood until the mosquitoes go back to hell where they belong and the temps drop enough to not get hot while riding...

The soft sides really only go on for a couple months of the year so I can get the wife to ride in the winter and block a little of the wind. Although after she gets halfway through a cup drink she's normally warmed up enough from the inside to not give a fawk. :grinpimp:

It'd be interesting to drive one of the HVAC rigs on the trail to see how much all that extra weight inhibits them... They gotta be more top heavy and not climb as well as a normal trail car due to the extra weight...

The Wild Cat XX used a YXZ engine hooked to a CVT trans. Ive seen a few at the races and those ****ers scream!!
One of few machines I haven't got a chance to look at up close.

RG designed the whole chassis on the XX I'm pretty sure, then took all of his designs to his own company.

Pictures never do the trails justice. Everyone always says that doesn't look bad!

We saw a ton of Expedition Northstar editions in NH this weekend. There was a caravan of 5 of them we passed at one point. Squeaky clean with the windows rolled up 20 miles in the woods. I borrowed a Northstar Ranger last summer when my wife's white blood count was still low. It was pretty quiet in the cab, and it kept everything in the backseat clean and dry. I wouldn't buy one, but i'd buy a sport machine that had full glass and hvac. Im surprised Polaris hasnt built one yet.

Ive got a glass windshield on the Talon. I love it. I can wear my sunglasses and not get pelted with mud and rocks. I had a poly on a rental before, and the glare was terrible.

Those are called Jeeps/Broncos...:flipoff2:

The glare isn't what bothers me. Its all the damn heat that stays in the cab that normally gets sucked out with no windshield. It will probably be ok to use once it cools down here in Texas, but for now its useless. We wore sunglasses all weekend and we didn't get hit in the face with mud and rocks.

We haul the full glass windshield and the poly half window with us everywhere. Then just adapt to conditions before we leave camp—ours come off and on in a few minutes. Even on some warmish days, the half windshield will make sense if you have very many road miles. But yeah, I’m dumbfounded by the full glass people in the summer.

Can you expound on that a bit more? I get that it's lacking 4-lo, but seems like for non-rock crawling activities it'd be fine. No?

They're geared too tall for anything technical. If you're doing medium paced trails I'm sure they're fine.

Xpedition is the closest thing you can get to a sport machine with HVAC, they're not bad but they're obviously no RZR. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a fully enclosed RZR with HVAC in the next few years. There are patent drawings of the XD1500 3 cylinder in a RZR chassis with a compressor hung off the engine already.

My thoughts on them also being from the mitten. Probably not worth 2 cents. lol

Pre 19 were not good for any tech / rock crawling.
19 up were a little better with lower first gear. Also moved the radiator to the back which is pretty cool.
24 they made it a 6 speed and added an even lower first gear, along with auto tranny that seems interesting.

I see some on the trails and have had a few local people tell me they would be cool as long as I wasn't trying to rock crawl with ne all the time.

A friend had one with a low gear kit installed that made crawling possible. He now has a KRX

I had a 16 YXZ for a few years...added the 70/30 low gear set, long travel, turbo, exhaust, cage, skids, seats, 32s, upgraded axles, driveshafts, steering, relocated radiator, etc. I really enjoyed it for everything except technical crawling...much more interactive driving experience than CVT. With that said, the X3 I replaced it with is a more flexible ride that does everything well, with a lot of the same upgrades...suspension mods (springs, valving, a-arms, trailing arms), cage, seats, axles, diffs, steering, 35s, etc. My experience is that you optimize any of these SXS's to fit what you're doing and to survive...everybody's experience is different.

Slow did you just wander around the Mena area or did you find trails to look for on OnX or something? Last trip to Mill Creek the last day there I just started exploring. had another buggy with me that was a KRX on 35s actually and we found a trail that I am not 100% sure was a legal trail. it wasn't marked on OnX but I did follow it several miles and it dead ended at someone's private ground. We turned around since it was obvious they weren't keen on trespassers.

Next time we head down I will hit you up.

On the portals. A friend has a 72" X3 with portals on it and runs 37s. it is stupid wide for trail riding like 82" or something. It does ok at SMORR since those trails are Jeep width but in AR he was working trying to stay on the trail.
