Offset Dana 41 rear gears are obsolete working with the third donor set.

Pattern before pulling. I need wrap this up to get to an event next week.

Old axle .014 backlash .025 pinion depth. my axle .015 backlash. Pinion preload is a little light still. I haven’t set up a set of gears since I was in school. The old pattern above and new pattern in my axle seems way close the the toe. Not sure if I should bump the back lash up to .020 or keep what I have.

for ****s an giggles the last two sets patterned up like this. Could only get a thin line on the drive side no matter the pinion depth. 0 +.020 and + .040 coast side would move some but drive was always a thin line like that.

I don't have specs for a 41 but nearly every Dana axle takes 0.006-0.010 thou of back lash. Tighten that sucker up and see what that does for you.

Yes spec is .006-.010. It was at .014 when pulled. From what I understand tightening it is only going to push the pattern tighter to the toe. I guess it lived like that before may be it will for a little longer.

Damn, that's some deep engagement. I'd be nervous as hell running that. Maybe it isnt an issue for this axle but I'd be resetting all of the things to get that pattern back into the middle. Remove pinion and add carrier?

Can't use use D44 gears in a 41 with a fucton of shim on one side of the carrier or under the pinion or something like that? Or am I thinking about a different rear end?

The Dana 41 uses a larger carrier than the 44. ring gear is like 9.25” instead of like 7 - 8 whatever a 44 is. I have an offset 44 under an another chassis that I picked up but I don’t have time to rebuild and upgrade a new axle from the ground up. This is the 3rd or 4th set of donor gears I’ve tried and the first one that I have even gotten to a pattern on the drive side (see 3rd post). First post shows pattern from donor axle that is also low. The only way I know to raise the pattern is to increase backlash. The tighter I make it the lower the pattern will go right ?

Essentially, yeah...
But, If you pull the pinion back, you need to shove the carrier over into it more. What are your shim packs looking like? (Not total, but each stack on either side)

Carrier shims are pretty even. Pulled .020 out of the pinion leaves at +.005. .012 backlash

The drive side looked damn near on the +.005. .012 backlash setup. But that coast side  :barf:

I think +.025 .015-.018 backlash. gives it the the best contact root to crown and matches closely to the donor axle pattern. I’m not thrilled with the results. But I don’t know what else to do

Manufacture date on these gears is 8-43 I think if it’s been like that for 70+ years it can go a little longer?

I think your +.025 pattern is the best bet, I always try to get used gear patterns as close to what they were before disassembly.

Used gears I always try to match the pattern that they were ran in on. They will make a weird print that may not look right but changing it runs the risk of them being noisy as hell.

What does the pinion pattern look like with the original shim and BL setting?

As “bad” as it looks me personally I’d run it just because that’s how it was being run. You’ve recreated the pattern pretty damn good. Seal it up and peel out.
