This isn't really a "build thread", more of a "getting it back on the road" thread. I have a feeling that over time there will be some scope creep and figured I'd start a thread to track it. It was last driven around 5-7 years ago.

The car belonged to a friend of mine that I've known for 20-ish years. He's owned it since high school, roughly 25 years or a little more. Over the last 15-ish years he's hardly driven it and I've tried to buy it from him several times. He's also offered to sell it to me a few times and couldn't follow through. He's pretty emotionally attached to the car.

A couple months ago he saw me walking through town, pulled over and said "still want to buy it?". I said of course, are you actually going to sell it? He told me a price and I said when can I come get it. That ended up being a bit of a process. Partially due to our schedules, and I'm pretty sure partially because he wasn't 100% onboard with letting it go. I have a text message from almost exactly two years ago of him asking the same thing...
Long story short, I pushed a little harder this time, got him to commit, and showed up at his place with $1k more than he told me. It was a done deal.

This car is a bit of a local celebrity and he's had a lot of guys trying to buy it over the years. It's fast. Well, was fast for it's time anyway. Combine that with being a 41yo car in the rust belt that is very clean (not perfect by any means) and has been well taken care of, and it's a unicorn around here. It probably has never seen snow or salt since new, and has hardly even been out in the rain.

Last Saturday I grabbed a car trailer from my BIL, and headed over in the afternoon to pick it up. Originally I asked about getting it started at his place and trying to drive it home. He said "if I hear it run I'm backing out of the deal". Fair.

We got it out of his shed and on the trailer, and I headed home with a big smile on my face. I wouldn't be surprised if there were tears on his end as I pulled out of his driveway.

It presents well for it's age. No body rust that I've seen so far. Some surface rust underneath. It does have dings and scratches as expected.
The engine was built by a well known/trusted local guy. It's based off a 355 with big heads, tunnel ram, and a thirsty quadrajet. The PO couldn't remember exact specs, but it was built for 425-450 or so hp.
Tranny is the original TH200. Rear is the factory 10bolt.

Some pics when I got it home and in the garage. It has a bit of a mouse smell and I did find where they had chewed on a few things. I'm letting it air out and will have to do a thorough cleaning.

Sunday the youngest daughter and I changed the starter, changed the oil/filter, and went front to back checking everything out. We couldn't get the old gas to siphon, so I dumped some seafoam and fresh gas in the tank to at least get it started. There were a few battery cables that needed fixed/cleaned, put a new battery in it, and after a few pumps on the gas pedal it came to life!
A buddy of mine has a good siphon, so this weekend we'll drain the tank completely and fill it with new gas. I'm trying to avoid dropping the tank if possible.
The daughter and I took it for a quick ride around the block, and of course the brake line that runs front to back blew about mid car and I lost pedal fast. I pulled it back into the garage and we checked fluids and everything else again.
We were pumped that it runs!!

Here's a pic of the daughter while she was waiting for the oil to drain. She insisted on doing the oil change herself.
Also a couple pics after we washed the barn dust off. It doesn't look too bad, but could use a good buff and wax.

I ordered a full set of stainless brake lines for it. I also need to replace the right front tire. It was sitting flat for who knows how long and the sidewall was soft from the rim sitting on it. I didn't want to risk a blowout. The rest of the tires are like new.

After we get the brake lines changed, all the old gas out and new gas in, and the tire swapped, we should be ready for a real shakedown run.

Once word got out that I bought it, I've had a handful of guys tell me that they couldn't believe he actually sold it. And a few tell me that they have good memories of doing crazy **** in it with him.

This summer's plans are to put miles on it and replace wear items as necessary. We'll see where it goes from there. There's some electrical issues I need to sort out. The blower isn't coming on, turn signals are not working, and a few other small items.
Once I know it's mechanically sound, then I'll start looking into possibly adding A/C again. We'll see.

Cool car.

I truly have never understood the emotional attachment some people get to a car.

You see it all the time.

I've had a lot of cool cars some I built, some I had built, most I did some crazy **** in but those are memories and I am happy to have them but the car itself doesn't mean **** to me.

I always feel they people like that are like uncle Rico on Napoleon dynamite just trying to relive their childhood again and not wanting to move on

Oh and I hope you are going to change the intake or put a cowl hood on that car, the cut hood screams " trailer park"

French Blue, I dig it. Here's mine that I built '09-11 with '01 LS1 w/ 4L60e, SC&C suspension, Baer Brakes, and Rushforth wheels. I sold it to Ridetech who used it to develop their g-body suspension system. In this ad, the car is how it looked when it left my posession except for Ridetech decal and suspension.

Can’t get much more American than the top pic.🍻🇺🇸

I can't recall how many times my GNs have been called Monte Carlo SSs.

Great looking car. That awesome your daughter is interested.

The brake line kit from inline tubing is pretty nice. Today I removed everything from the front block to the rear wheels and installed the main line that runs front to back.
Even though this is “Iowa rust free” there’s still enough rust that fittings were seized and it took longer than I wanted it to.

The routing for that line is kind of a bitch and with pre bent stainless it sucked. You have to go behind and over some **** and it was a bit of a struggle.

I’m soaking the wheel cylinder fittings with PB blaster and will run the two short lines tomorrow. Hopefully I don’t have to change wheel cylinders due to the fittings being seized in.

Around 3pm I called it a day and the wife and I went golfing. I had about 3 1/2 hours in it today but wasn’t hitting it too hard.

Photos brings back memories, my aunt and uncle had his and hers Monte Carlo SS with t-tops. His was maroon, and hers was white, bought them new together. Kept them showroom condition until early 2000’s when they past. My idiot cousins each got one and within a year had destroyed them both. White ones in the family junkyard now and barely resembles a car, and the maroon one was a demo derby car after it was in a few accidents, no idea where it ended up.
