1969 K20, extended cab build

Really cool build! I was curious to know if this is on a factory long bed frame or is it custom as well? Also if you don’t mind sharing, what’s the wheel base?
It’s a factory longbed. I haven’t measured wheelbase, but I did a quick google search and it says 127.

I went back through the thread to read it again because of the pause in updates. Good to see things moving again!

Then time to redesign the windows started.

So, did they fabricate the rear window frames from scratch? Use parts from donors? Use parts from reproduction parts?
Just curious due to a project of my own.

The rear windows were made using 4 doors. If you look closely, it’s a standard upper door/window frame in the right/top position, and upper door/window frame, flipped upside down to create the left lower window frame.

Fawking Awe$ome!!!

What do you think of the instrument panel you put in?

Drive good handle ?
How many miles on it so far.?
I'll bet. A lot of heads are turning!!!

So I’ll give an update.
A month and a half ago, my uncle came over and saw the cab sitting on the frame. He was the one that helped get it to Texas to the metal guy.
My uncle and I are very close and i visit him and my aunt as much as possible.

That day, i decided i was gonna drive it to his house for spring break (last week). He lives in Boulder City Nevada and im in galt ca.

I spent countless days in this thing, stressing, welding, smashing hands, worrying about parts not showing, etc.

Long story short, I finished the truck Friday at 7pm, hooked up a trailer and the general and my wife, son and two dogs were on the road at 9am, Saturday morning.

We went up 88 to Gardnerville to have lunch with my daughter, then stayed in bishop for the night.
Blew the boost tube off climbing a grade up 88. My fault, forgot to tighten it.

After bishop, we crossed over hwy 168. This is a ****in goat trail with pavement. Steep grades that really tested the build.

Made it to I believe 95 when 5th gear disappeared, about 200 miles from my uncle. Obviously the nut backed off. It was a loud and painful 5 hours. A 12 valve screaming in that cab sucks and I mean sucks. 54-55mph max cause i didn’t wanna blow it up.

Made it to my uncles and immediately dropped the t-case and pulled the tail housing. Nut just backed off. I corrected it and found a nut lock kit in Vegas so it doesn’t happen again.

Drove it home Friday night, stopped in tehachapi for the night. Jumped back on the road yesterday morning around 9:30 and was home at 2.

The 3rd gear synchro is gone. The fluid I originally changed was thick and dark like gear oil and didn’t look like synchromesh. Oh well, I’ll yank it and rebuild it.

The trip was epic. My wife and son are amazing and supported me from beginning to end.

The truck is far from perfect, or even complete, but I just pulled off over 1200 miles, towing a rzr in a truck I never even test drove after building from the frame up, so I have zero complaints.

Love the instrument panel. Waiting on parts for the tach and speedo.

Handles very well. Steering is super tight and it only has a small amount of bump steer from the height. The power steering pump seems weak, but the wide ass tires don’t help. My skinny swampers are going back on now that the trip is complete.

Constant thumbs up. Pretty cool to see it alive.

Sweet truck. Came out really nice.

The NV4500 uses Castrol Syntorq, not Synchromesh. It is a gear oil (75W-85). The important part is that it's GL4 rated, but not GL5 rated. I think you can get it from GM and Mopar too (it's been 10+ years since I've needed any though).

Wrote mesh, but meant torq. I put the gl-4 in it, had to order it because nobody carries it. Unfortunately, it was too late based on the fluid I originally removed.

Now I just have to tear it down and rebuild it and start all over with it.

I figured that was the case, but thought it was worth mentioning just in case. I'd hate to see you smoke a fresh trans after all the work you've put into the truck.

I never lost the 5th gear nut or the synchros, but I lost a couple teeth off 3rd gear at ~180-190k in my '97 Dodge. I exchanged it for a reman '98+ style for the shorter shifter throws.

Badass truck and awesome to see it doing truck things.

I run this in my nv4500s , no issues and not 25 a quart like some stuff is. I put synchros in the one I daily drive and put that oil in it , no complaints and price is better than any other option.
