Two holer hay trailer build

I misspoke earlier, and meant a wireless remote system like in the link. Those are fairly simple. My FIL had a setup to open his boat gate.

Old dogs...New tricks....would just be a waste of time

I’ve been a little busy but had some time this morning. I had to cut out Drummer79 ‘s swoopty gussets when I cut everything down, but I went back with these so he didn’t feel left out.

That and worked out load securement.

I don't recall bitching about lack of gussets. I just had a misunderstanding of what this thing was trying to haul. If you really want to memorialize me in this build you should either burn in CWP or Mystic as a shout out to my boat :flipoff2:

I believe you accused me of over enginerding the whole thing. Words hurt, Drummer. :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

There are usually 2 types of farmers.
1.Can build anything, takes care of equipment on the major points.
2.Can break anything, abuses the **** out of equipment and pieces it along with bailing twine or fence wire.
The problem is the two types are usually best friends, brothers or neighbors, sometimes a combination of those.

Most of you were just throwing out the general, run of the mill, misguided statements I’ve come to expect from the ignorant rabble that populate this place. I don’t think anybody but him actually used the term enginerd.

:flipoff2: :flipoff2:
If it helps your vagina stop hurting, I meant it as a compliment, kinda like the amazing fab skills some others have on here for monster trucks, etc.. instead of double penetration hay trailers :flipoff2: :lmao:

I know a couple of local # 2's. They are special

Had a little time this week. Finished up the latches and went ahead and loaded a couple bales to make sure it wasn’t going to get squirrelly.

Then this afternoon I wired the lights, adjusted the brakes, and put an extension on the jack handle.

Not as bad as it looked!

Is that just a solid piece of steel?
The bumper? 4x6x1/4 tube.

****, the piece on the ground? I believe it’s 6x6xsomething tube, capped on both ends. It’s convenient for using the mag drill with a hole saw.

A couple guys I know have started with the “if you ever decide to make another one,” stuff. One of them is convinced that the sort of people who buy Hughes and Easley stock trailers would pay for one of these. I don’t think I want to be a hay trailer builder, but if somebody makes an offer after a couple years when I know for sure what I’d do differently I might sell it and build a better one.

It’s one thing if it’s just a “income generating hobby”, tinker with building one of them at a time over the course of a month or so, sell it and make $3k. It’s another when you care about efficiency, a profitable hourly rate that matches your other income, etc.

I built a little utility trailer that solves 99% of the issues I’ve dealt with on trailers forever, it is freaking awesome. Guys that get it love it, but there are so many little details it would have to sell for ~ $7,500 or so unless I had cheap labor. I have no plasma table though.

One change I’d make to your design for versatility purposes would be having the cross braces on the hay bale cradles attach with pins. That thing looks like it would be awesome for hauling pipe, telephone poles, and even fence posts around ranches. Plenty long enough without being a massive trailer, high clearance so you aren’t dragging through ditches, and easy to unload.

I thought about different ways of making bolt on end pieces for different sized bales or just for taking them off for longer stuff. I went with the weld on tubes for now because it was the easiest way to get something rolling to see what works and it’s not hard to change it if I decide to later. I don’t have a need for it right away, but eventually I want to make a bolt in piece that bridges between the two cradles for hauling three bales.

I’ve got some different ideas for using it to haul other stuff. It’s not hard to pull the hay cradles off and make some sort of bolsters for hauling longer stuff. I haven’t come up with a reason why I would do it yet, but I could put a swivel bolster on the bed of the truck and one on the trailer for hauling long stuff.

I’m going to need to haul some 26’ sticks of sucker rod sometime this summer. I haven’t measured yet but I think I can make something out of some 20’ sticks of angle iron that pins on top of the cradles where the sucker rod hangs 5’ off the back of the trailer and is high enough above the truck bed to clear it in the front.

I'm proud of you and the finished product. :flipoff2: You could probably haul the space shuttle on that thing, but looks good and works as it should, over enginerded or not :flipoff2:

Had a little time to mess with it some today. I’ve been using it and am pretty happy so far. I get tempted sometimes to do something fancy with the latches, but they’re pretty bulletproof as it is. Anything else I try is going to over complicate it.

Anyway. Got a spare tire mount on it. Meant to take a picture with the spare mounted, but then I painted the attaching plate and jingle-hootus so maybe Monday when they’re dry. So just look at the picture of the tire sitting there and use your imagination.

And then I went ahead and painted a little more. I’ll let it hang all weekend and may do one more coat Monday morning. Or probably not.

It’s going to be a sharp looking trailer. I may just haul it around sometimes to make this ugly old world a brighter place. Let all the people with black and red trailers just feel plain and ordinary.

Shot a coat of primer yesterday. Now I’m trying to decide if I should shoot one more coat of primer tomorrow or do a coat of paint. I’ve still got a lot of primer left, so I’m kind of leaning towards another coat of primer.

Im not a paint guy.
