Build TrashE

Just got back from about a 20 mile drive to fill up the tank (40 gallons now) and the tires took about 5 miles to warm up and lose the flat spots. I felt comfortable going 70mph on the straights but don’t really want to live there. 64 mph @ 2k rpm felt a little bit gear bound, 4.56 might have been a better choice than the 4.88s I have but it’s a multi purpose rig so whatever. Also there is a little bit of gear clatter when I let off the accelerator which I think is the np205.

Getting started on the rear bumper, after way too much thought I finally settled on a simple design. Bent tube didn’t look right, miter joints looked better but still kind of out of place. I ended up using some channel iron that I happen to have an abundance of.

The horizontal plate spanning the topside was a way to cheat it down a little bit, I almost didn’t drill and dimple it because it takes forever. I’m sure glad I did though, I think it looks pretty sweet.

Little end caps that kind of tie things together.

Built most of it on the table to make sure it was nice and straight. Also had some square tube tacked to the front and top while I was fitting it to the body.

1/4” plates that get fully welded to the channel and bolt to the chassis.

The frame plates sit flush with the top of the channel.

Needed some tread plate and everything I had was too thick. Keeping with the nature of the build I was able to scrounge some material from what I already had laying around.

I actually made these twice, first time the pattern was not quite symmetrical left to right and it bugged me. Anyway I got them nailed down eventually. The channel iron was all stick welded, MiG welded the tread plate from the bottom side, and the back seam is tig welded to the dimpled plate.

Reason for tig welding along the back was because I didn’t want an obvious weld bead. I think it came out alright.

Hey man I hate to ask but I didn't see it or can't remember seeing it, what WMS is that rear axle? Also are you running any type of spacers?

No worries, rear axle is from a DRW pickup and the wms is 72 inches. No spacers front or back. The drw Chevy/gm trucks of this vintage (2000ish) with a pick up body are a little wider than srw, van, and c&c trucks.

Ah ok ty for info man. I have a 94 ram I'm using the chassis out of and its a D70 rear with 4.10's and obviously being 94 its drum which is ok for my needs but I was thinking the front might eventually get the D50 spindle treatment and I know it's supposed to make the front like 3/4" per side wider so the rear might look bit narrow. Perfect excuse in my mind to upgrade to a GM van D70 to get the same gearing with disk brakes at same time and I think they are 70" wide if I remember correct.

I had a 14 bolt from a savanna van and the wms was like 67.5 or 68 inches, I would double check the 70 you plan to use. The front axle in this truck is 3/4” narrower than the rear.

Yeah I think it has to be 2003 and up van with the full floating hubs and SRW. If I remember right the chassis cab ones got the 14 bolt or AAM axle at some point. I have an older van 14b axle here under a 99 but it is a DRW box van so bit different than what I wanted to run. I'll be checking it over for sure to make sure its the correct axle that I want. Even if I don't end up with one for awhile its fine since there isn't anything really wrong with the current axle.

Made a little thingy, something I’ve been wanting to try for a while.

2-5/8 JJ

2x.250 DOM for the bottom bar with a bushing at the axle end.
IMG_6095.jpeg

Welds to the bottom of the frame rail and has UHMW sliders inside and out.
IMG_6118.jpeg

Tack welded some FB to keep the rails true while I was installing.

Added some gussets here and there. Top bar is 1-3/8x.188 4130 tube I had left over (from a pan hard bar I think) and uses an FK heim joint on the bar. Running bushings on both the axle ends. I had to buy the JJ, jam nut, and adapter but everything else I had in the shop.

Still need to swap both doors, both fenders, and the hood from the donor truck in post #221. The welds on the service body need to be ground smooth, needs the tailgate installed, shorten the open top lid, more body work, hydro assist, rear disc brakes, I want to build an aluminum frame canvas topper, skid plate, headache rack that ties into the frame and serves mainly as a roll bar, and on and on but I’m enjoying driving it around so far. I have a bunch of stuff to do still but hopefully the next round of updates will have some wheeling pics. The wheelbase ended up at 125”.
I did have to slap some paint on it, and for the first time since owning it for over 9 years it’s finally all one color.:rasta:

From a beater POS 2wd truck to …. Well a beater 4wd truck but now with lockers and 40s!

I had to read this post twice, for a second I thought you had a IH truck in NH I could come get after building an anti wrap bar & slider . :lmao:

Well, that's an interesting take, but no, there are two responses :flipoff2:

But for the right amount of money, anything's for sale, so I guess that could be true? Lol

I like the slider box for the wrap bar. I may have to do that on my CJ8, as it would take a normal iron industries slider.

I'd still like a big assed one for my LB7 powered IH.

You build a lot of cool ****, for all I know you have 3 or 4 of those trucks sitting around. :lmao:

That’s very true, and for the right price you could drive it away today.:grinpimp:

That's a damn nice offer man TY. Problem is I think I would spend more in gas to come get it then buying one nearby, unless I can borrow someones prius and shove it in the hatch. Wonder if I could get a hand off deal where someone is coming part way or heading past me.
