Figured I’d ask here cuz Ford. My TJ has a 2000-ish era Dynatrac Dana 60 and uses 8.8 brakes. Rotors are re-drilled with the 5x4.5 lug pattern.

1- One side has no parking brake mechanism inside the rotor and the backing plate has damage (forgot to take pics when apart).

2- Due to TJ short body, from a side view, where the parking brake cable splits left/right is nearly inline with bracket on backing plate to activate the brake. So cable has to do a 180 to get back in front of brakes, then another 180 to connect to brakes. Due to these turns, cable is pretty roached and likely needs replacing (rusted out).

Was gonna just throw on some junkyard parking brake items, but the more I stared at this. Wondered if there is a better solution.

I see this option, basically a new bracket to enable use of 2020+ Explorer brakes with electric actuator to use caliper as the parking brake.

Would this work?
Drawbacks to electronic parking brake?
I’m over thinking the cable and its ability to bend 180 x2?

Looking at the Range product, it may not work. This picture has the flange inset from the end of axle tube. Current mounting flange is on the end of the axle tube. I’ll pull a tire an do some measurements.

maybe a shot in the dark and I have no idea what I'm talking about, but could you rob the factory parts from a sport trac explorer with the factory disks?

Edit, I cant read and this comment is useless

All I got is some of the OE parking brakes mirror the assemblies, and others use the same plate left and right. Maybe one arrangement is better for cable routing.

FWIW I have the stock style 90’s Explorer disk brake kit on a 9” axle on my early Bronco.
I’m on 35’s and it won’t hold on a slope.
I would look at the newer electric style.

If you don't need the parking brake to be mechanical for inspection purposes, maybe line lock it with a 2kpsi 1/4 turn valve plumbed into the rear circuit.

It's been a while, but had these guys make up some nice custom parking brakes cables... as I recall; they were reasonable, as well.

You can tell them something like YJ front connection, 8.8" rear connection, custom length, etc.

Definitely have that concern especially given the cable routing not sure how much leverage it will have.

Yep, saw those. Still not sure they will operate great based on the two 180 degree bends.
From experience, big swoopty curves are fine. Sharp bends and pretzels are trouble. Longer cables are more forgiving.

And yes, drum-in-hat stuff sucks for holding power.

I’ll check that, if the axle mount flange is symmetrical, maybe I can flip flop the assembly to put the cable pull behind the axle.

This would put the caliper in front of the axle, is that a problem?

If only there were a parking brake bible:

There's even add on brackets and caliper part numbers...

I have F150 electric all in one calipers on my 14B in my CJ8. They're rated for a 10,400lb GVW.

What about S197 mustangs? They still used a cable (directly to caliper)

Or going way back, Mark VII's
came on 8.8's in the late 80's, early 90's and had rear disk with caliper that had integral
emerg brake (cable).

What is your rotor thickness?

Now that I answered your question about electric parking brakes (they're the best).

I have serious doubts about your current install.

I have an 8.8 in a jeep, with these cables: Emergency Brake Cable (8.8 Axle) for Jeep Wrangler TJ (1997-06)

There isn't a 180 at all, let alone two. Perhaps call M.O.R.E and verify that you don't have two lefts or two rights?

Some dark pictures from this evening.

So…cables are not quite at 90. My comment on the 180 was to get them with more strain relief, they should be 180.

Just using the drum in hat , Explorer. It was the easy button. Worked great in the driveway. After maybe 200 miles of driving, need to readjust as it doesn’t hold for ****. Will need to consider other options.
